Elizabeth Gris com was the eighth child out of seventeen. She was born on New Years Day, 1752. She met John Ross on a November night in 1773 and was married in New Jersey. From then on people had known her as Betsy Ross.
It just so happened that; John died after three years of their marriage (1776).
In 1777, she wed Joseph Ashburn. Ashburn died in Old Mill Prison in 1782 after the British captured his boat during the American Revolution. Ross married again a year later, this time to John Claypool, who had shared a prison cell with her second husband (Joseph Ashburn).
They had five daughters. In 1817, after Claypool’s death, Ross went to live with a daughter in Philadelphia. This was where General George Washington, financier Robert Morris, and Colonel George Ross, her late husband’s uncle, called on Betsy and asked her to design and make a national flag. Ross’s daughter recalls ” (George) Washington, (George) Ross, and Robert Morris came to Mrs. Ross’s house in June 1776 and asked her to make a flag for the new country that was on the verge if declaring its independence. She suggested a design to Washington, he made a rough pencil sketch on the basis of it, and she there upon made the famous flag in her back parlor.
She is supposed also to have suggested the use of the five rather than the six- pointed star chosen by Washington.” (search. biography. com) The flag design that was chosen was the normal stripes, but the stars were in a circle so that no one colony would be viewed above another. It is reported that George Washington said, “Let the 13 stars in a circle stand as a new constellation in the heavens.” (web) No one actually knows where Betsy sewed and designed the American flag. But it has been said that she had moved to a house on 1773 and rented rooms there till 1786.
The Term Paper on George Washington 13
GEORGE WASHINGTON Abstract George Washington was the son of a father who had gone to school in England and several large Virginia estates. He took to surveying in boyhood and decided that ...
So this was probably where the flag creation took place. Betsy Ross remains a very significant person in American history for many reasons. She went through many difficulties through her lifetime, like her marriage and her three husbands death. Without her, our symbol of freedom would look much different than it does today.
She worked miracles with needle and thread, as she made our land a little more patriotic. Without her, we would have no flag. Without any flag, there would be nothing to symbolize our freedom, liberty, pride, and for our whole outright nation itself.
