Billy lived a life of an outlaw because of the loss of his parents, he gained friends and lost enemies, which led to his death.
The legends of Billy the kid are many, like so many legends are. This legend is a mix of three to fore legends out there they all contain most of the same content. There might be one or more things the writer might put in there that he found in a trip to Lincoln. This is the story he found to shear with all. Reportedly Billy the kid was in New York City on November 23,1859. He was born under the name William Henry McCarty (Bonny) to William H. and Kathleen (Catherine) McCarty (Bonny).
William had an older brother named Joseph (Josie) how was born in 1855 only fore years older then William .the family moves to Coffeyville, Kansas in 1862 but soon after in 1864 they moved to Colorado. Some time between 1862-1864 the father dies but there is no sure date since no death certificate or obituary has been located. (“Billy” Online)
On 1866, Catherine McCarthy and her two sons moved to Marion County, Indiana. Here she met William Antrim from Huntsville, Indiana. The reverent D.F. McFarland of the First Presbyterian Church from Santa Fe married Catherine and William Antrim. Shortly after the wedding they moved to Silver City, New Mexico, were Antrim became a miner because he had heard of rich silver strikes there. About mid-way through the year of 1874 Williams mother developed acute tuberculosis caseous pneumonia, more commonly known as “galloping consumption”. Catherine died on September 16, 1874 when William was only fourteen years old. William and his stepfather did not get along after Catherine died. William and another youth named Gorge Shaffer “Sombrero Jack” stole some cloths from a Chinese laundry, mostly as prank but they were arrested. William Rather then face the wrath of his stepfather left town drifting around Arizona, performing odd jobs on a ranch and in small towns. Billy was about eighteen when he shot and killed his first man on August 17, 1877. Billy and Frank P. “Windy” Cahill had been arguing in Adkins dance hall and frank called Billy a pimp and slapped him on the face. Billy was only five feet and seven inches tall and weighed 140lbs. He was no match for Frank who was much larger then him. Billy shot Frank with his own guns, Frank died the next day. Billy was arrested but escaped gets a short time later. Billy returned to Lincoln on July 17,1878 but left town again after a gunfight with sheriff Brady. Billy went to Alex McSween’s and when sheriff Peppin heard he sent sixty men to surround the house. They promised Billy is would be safe if he surrendered, but he refused. By this time, thirty-five more men had arrived. Sheriff Peppin had them all around the house at ever door and window but even though, Billy refused to give up. (Green & Sanford 15)
Billy had been in the McSween house for three days, sheriff Peppin sent for help to Colonel Nathan A.M Dudley at Fort Stanton army post Dudley sent two squadrons of buffalo soldiers to assist Peppin. When they arrived Peppin sent one to set fire to the back of the house. Three women came out and eleven men attempted to leave but were shot at the doorway thinking they were Billy. By the time Billy came out he had two pistols one in each hand. He came out shooting, killed one man and wounded two others. (Morrison & Sonnichsen 16)
Billy wrote a litter to Governor Lew Wallace offering to testify against Dolan in exchange for safety on March 12,1879. Lew wrote Billy back to arrange a meeting at squire Wilson’s house to discus Billy’s testimony on March 25,1879. Billy was asked to testify at Fort Stanton on May 25,1879 in the trial of Colonel Dudley. Dudley was being tried for complicity in the death of Alex McSween. Billy went on to trial on April 8,1881 before judge Warren H. Bristol in Mesilla, New Mexico facing two charges. One the murder of an officer on an Indian reservation, two the murder or sheriff Brady. Billy was found guilty on both charges agents him and sent to Lincoln to be incarcerated in the Lincoln county jail. In jail Billy came up with a plan to get out, he was playing cards with the guard and dropped his cards so the guard would have to pick them up and as he did so Billy took his gun, shot him and got out of the jail cell. He knew the other guard was next door and would be coming to see what had happened, as he was Billy from the balcony shouted out hello and shot him. July 14,1881 Pat Garret became sheriff with Poe and McKinney as deputies. They rode to Fort Sumner, New Mexico to the Maxwell house. Maxwell was a mutual friend of Billy so Pat would see if Billy came around.
Billy did came and saw the deputies out side and asked Quienes (Spanish for how is it?) as they did not answer, he went inside to ask Maxwell who they are he saw someone else there and asked again Quienes (Spanish for how is it?).
Pat recognized his voice, pulled out his gun and shot Billy, it only took one shot but it was fatal Billy died around mid-night. (“Billy” Online)
Even though he was thought to be a bad guy Billy was only defending him self. One reason he became an outlaw was he lost his parents while he was still young. Another reason is his stepfather and him did not get along after the death of the mother. Billy stared living the life of an outlaw to keep away from his stepfather. The death of Billy was a tragedy to many men how wanted to be like him. The death of Billy was only the first step and will always live-forever in many how still believe.
