He was born in 1896 to Harum Dempsey in Manassa, Colorado. His father was a poor timber man and a miner so it was rough for Jack when he was growing up. When Jack was just a mere sixteen years old, he had become homeless. But in a matter of a year, he pursued his dream of being a boxer.
He became extremely good and became a professional during that year. Few people were able to keep standing after their bout. In nineteen-seventeen, he returned to box with a manager named Jack Hearts. His story will soon to become a “Rags to riches” story. Jack Dempsey, also known as the “Manassa Mauler,” had a great impact in the nineteen-twenties.

Jack Dempsey had held the title of Heavyweight champion for seven years after retiring Jess Willard by giving him a broken jaw, two broken ribs, a closed eye, and a partial loss of hearing. But on September 22 nd, 1927, almost a year after their 1 st meeting, they began the fight, which was called the “Long Count.” People knew that this was going to be a magnificent duel. But unknowingly, the referee of the match had not counted correctly and robbed Dempsey of his title. Dempsey had accomplished a great feat in which not many boxers has ever done.
His record was astounding with 61 wins and only 6 losses and 8 ties. These were only the recorded fights, it was said the Dempsey had well over a hundred unrecorded fights. So as you can see, Jack Dempsey was an important person to have in the nineteen-twenties. He created great entertainment for people and had a very long life, which lasted from 1896-1983.
