Our ancestors that were born in the late 1950’s experienced the Brown vs. The Board of Education Supreme Court case that arose in the era of segregation amongst blacks and whites. In this era, nine African Americans attempted to make appearance at a local school in Little Rock, Arkansas to show that they were indeed equals. Gwendolyn Brook’s poem gives you an impression on what is going on in that specific era, due to the fact that, she read multiple newspapers, magazines, and books which inspired her to write this poem and reach out to individuals about the court case which would make a difference for the future generation.
In addition, the narrator speaks and demonstrates that the people of the town were so peaceful and very church-based but as the poem is closing the town isn’t so copacetic. Whites began to be cruel and toss items at African Americans. Which makes you wonder, will this ever change in the world or continue? As a site of conflict, setting has three functions in Gwendolyn Brooks’ “The Chicago Defender Sends a Man to Little Rock”: it reveals time, character, and circumstances. Setting reveals a time of civil rights conflict. This shows a time in which violence was shown from whites towards blacks.
The quote states, “The biggest News I do not dare. Telegraph to the Editor’s chair: They are like people everywhere. ” (Brooks 46-48) Blacks were not able to attend white public schools because segregation was taking a place. Most historical event that touched based in Little Rock was “The Little Rock Nine”, who entered Central High School through the main entrance. The Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka ruled against segregation in public schools. This turned white mobs to verbally and physically hurt the students and the black reporters that were recording it all.

The efforts of the nine students will forever be remembered in Little Rock. Little Rock is what started the desegregation of the other schools in other states and paved the way for future ahead. Setting discloses a character in the poem. The character that is disclosed in the poem was indeed the reporter from Chicago. The reporter was sent from the defender to retrieve information about segregation and why it occurs in Little Rock, Arkansas. The reporter expects to find turmoil against the black race in the city. Instead, he finds out that whites are just like everyone else.
The quote states, “I scratch my head, massage the hate-I-had. I blink across my prim and pencilled pad. The saga I was sent for is not down. Because there is a puzzle in this town. The biggest News I do not dare Telegraph to the Editor’s chair: “They are like people everywhere. “”. (Brooks 42-48) What the reporter is trying to imply is that he went to find monsters but found humans in their place. That the hate he had for monsters doesn’t exist any longer because he understands exactly what is going on. Lastly, he implies that this could happen anywhere, it just happened to surface here.
Setting also attests circumstances that arise in the poem. The author provides insight about situations in that specific era. The poem speaks about the lynching of blacks in the time of segregation. When lynching of blacks occurred it was never written in newspapers because it was not relevant, due to the fact, which it didn’t pertain to the white race. Blacks were only acknowledged when they committed a crime or died a horrible death. The quote states, “The lariat lynch-wish I deplored. The loveliest lynchee was our Lord. ” (Brooks 59-60) This quote depicts sorrow in the town and deplores that it’s happening.
As we know, Christ died for the sins of others and to make lives of others better. In this case, African Americans were being sacrificed for the eventual good of future African Americans. Time, character, and circumstances are important elements of setting that show conflict in Gwendolyn Brooks’ “The Chicago Defender Sends a Man to Little Rock. ” Without the setting, the poem wouldn’t have much insight and meaning for that specific era. The setting shows the environment and surroundings of the poem, as well as, prepares you for what you are going to read.
