Motivation is “the set of forces that initiates, directs, and makes people persist in their efforts to accomplish a goal” (Williams 241).
The article “Global trends in motivating employees” by Joni Romero and Brian Kleiner evaluates the importance of motivating employees while taking certain factors into consideration.
The authors suggest that “previous employee experience and pre-existing cultural beliefs, cultural background and moral values, good attendance, safety, and what brings about such activities, and ultimately job stability” (Romero) must be considered in order to properly motivate employees. A company must analyze the culture where their business is located and the background from the employees they have in order to implement effective motivational techniques in the workplace.
In 1991, Richard Lynn studied “12,000 same-age, same-educational-level students from 41 countries” (Romero) using a questionnaire that measured each student’s “work ethic, achievement motivation, mastery, competitiveness, money beliefs, and attitudes to saving” (Romero).
Results showed several differences between the countries the students lived in such as “the Americas achieved the highest score on work ethic, mastery, savings, and conformity” (Romero) while “Asian and Far East students had the highest score on competitiveness and money beliefs” (Romero).

This information would allow a company to motivate employees based on money instead of work ethic for a culture with high money beliefs. In addition to analyzing the culture and background of company’s location and employees, the authors turn to two trends that exist in motivating employees, and the first trend being job stability. They state that “the transition to a market economy” (Romero) has made “East European employees…more concerned with keeping their jobs than getting a bonus” (Romero).
This could be said about the U. S. n the last couple of years, in which many people are afraid of losing their jobs, so they are motivated to increase their value to the company to avoid layoffs. The second trend the authors mention in their article is attendance and safety. They give examples of how certain companies use positive reinforcements in their incentives to improve attendance and safety within the workplace. Motivating employees to have good attendance is significant because it means employees are on time more often and do not miss workdays which will improve performance overall of the company.
Likewise, motivating employees to follow safety procedures will decrease costs for having to deal with breaches in safety and will improve operations overall as well. The article “Global trends in motivating employees” by Joni Romero and Brian Kleiner relates to the material covered in class about employee motivation. The authors state that positive reinforcement, “reinforcement that strengthens behavior by following behaviors with desirable consequences” (Williams 253), “should be employed in the workplace, both domestic and international” (Romero).
Also, they show how intrinsic and extrinsic rewards really do work. An employee is motivated by the intrinsic reward of keeping his or her job, and an employee is motivated by the external reward of receiving a personal gift. In my opinion, the article did not go more into depth with other factors dealing with motivation such as equity theory, but it made up for the omission by showing how culture and background help stablish building blocks for the motivation technique to be used.
