Throughout time society has been tested many a time. The tests of society are those which show the development of a society’s culture, morals and value system. The recent events of Maycomb have shown it has not developed or flourished but that with the death of my dear husband, Tom, it has failed miserably. Justice, although bittersweet, is the pie that society has been given the duty to serve. The once-solid pillars of fairness and humanity upon which our society was built are crumbling. The trials and tribulations of Tom Robinson have not only led me to lose faith in justice, fairness and humanity but removed my veil of ignorance and shown me the ignorant “whites” have the power to kill even the sweetest of mockingbirds.
These injustices have begun long before Tom’s trial, but it is his trial which epitomizes the problems with our society. The first witness was simply just a misguided fellow named Heck Tate who it seems didn’t have much to offer to the case. Next, Atticus Finch called Bob Ewell to the stand. When I saw Ewell take the stand such a fierce hatred rose within me that I began to shake and tremble. Ewell wrongfully accused Tom of raping his daughter Mayella, however, with the grace of God, Atticus Finch had shown that it was very possible that it was Bob Ewell who because he was a lefty could have beat Mayella. If it were not for great men like Atticus Finch I would have lost all hope for this world.
As I watched Mayella take the stand I wondered how such a kind looking person could be someone of such poor character. Her words seemed to paint a picture of a sad life; one where a father neglects her and she has fallen under hard times. Atticus, after pointing out it was probably Bob who beat her, asked Mayella who it really was that beat her. Mayella made it clear it was Tom Robinson, upon which Atticus asked Tom to stand. To the astonishment of the court Tom was handicapped! Tom was then called to the stand where he laid open for all to see the truth, explaining that it was Mayella who came on to him (that treacherous woman! ).
The Essay on Harper Lee Society Scout Atticus
Bullying And Discrimination Differences in the social status are observed considerably large in the society of Maycomb. Scout and Jem are two little children who are growing up, observing all the complicated incidents and trying to understand them. In the Maycomb County, incidents get more and more complicated as the dilemma of racism becomes bigger and bigger and as wise Atticus starts loosing ...
Soon enough the trial ended and every one awaited the verdict of the jury.
The next few hours were the most nerve wracking of my life. Wondering how I would support my children, stopping to tell myself the jury will find him innocent. But it was not to be so as the jury announced that Tom had been found guilty. It was a hot summer’s day well after Tom had been put in jail and I could bear no more. My heart ached for my dearest one who belonged at my side helping to feed our kids; not in a jail cell! The pain of the world was trapped in my heart, or so it felt as I reflected on the events of Maycomb. As I stare into the horizon I see, slowly but surely, Atticus and Calpurnia approaching.
A grim look on Atticus’s face and a tearful Calpurnia hugged me. I too began crying because I realized that the world which I had known is crashing. The one who I loved with all my heart has been torn from my arms and the warmth of the world and any chance of happiness with him. Atticus said, “Helen, Tom’s-” and then I collapsed before Atticus could finish.
The lost years, the broken dreams and an eternal love no more. It has now turned to mid October and with October has come a dangerous problem. To reach the property of Mr. Link Deas where I work I must pass by the property of Bob Ewell.
To go by their land had a become such nuisance for they would clunk things at me that I took a longer, but safer route to work. Mr. Deas noticed that I was coming the wrong way to work and when he found out why he lambastes Bob Ewell. So, I resumed taking my normal route but found someone uttering foul words as I traveled and discovered Bob Ewell was following me.
Mr. Deas, being the altruistic soul he is again warned Bob Ewell to cut it out. Surely enough, Bob Ewell would harass me no more! If the future of society lay in the hands of Bob Ewell and company, it would be a grim one indeed. However, it is said that the goodness of one man can save the whole world. Well society despite it’s grim future has two good men; Atticus Finch and Link Deas are men who will work to make our dream for the future a reality. I have a dream that one day my children will live to see a world governed not by skin color, but by the characteristics of a person’s persona, moral fiber and spirit.
The Essay on Bob Ewell Courage Atticus Mrs
People have different perceptions of courage all the time; some think it is a man with a gun in hand; some see courage as mental strength to persevere and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty; others think courage is an ordinary person, doing extraordinary things; or even standing up for what is right, even if you are standing alone. In Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, courage is illustrated ...
A day where justice will be served and humanity will redeem itself.
