The Book Of Job
The Book of Job is a book in the Old Testament of the bible. It talks about a man who had everything a person could want in life. Then, unexpectedly it goes away. The main question to ask throughout the story is: Why do bad things happen to good people?
Job was the wealthiest and happiest man in the entire area. He owned many herds of animals and employed many servants to tend to them. Job also raised 10 children, seven sons and three daughters. When the sons had birthdays they would celebrate in grand fashion, and when the celebration was over with Job would sacrifice a burnt offering in place of his sons’ sins.
Satan paid a visit to God from Earth. God started to brag about his servant Job, and how good he was. Satan remarked that the only reason he is good to you is because you give him anything and everything to live a very successful life. Satan is then told he is aloud to take away Job’s wealth but cannot harm him physically. All of Job’s children were dining at the oldest brother’s house when bad things began to happen. All of his livestock had been driven off or burned. Each different section of his land that things happened to only one servant survived to come and tell him the news. Another servant came and told him that a whirlwind came and collapsed the roof on his son’s home and killed all of his children. Job stated that God brought him into the world with nothing, and now he can live and die with nothing.
Satan came back again on another visit, and again God bragged about how Job was the finest man on Earth. So he said that a man would give up anything to save his own life. God told Satan to do whatever he wanted to him but he had to live no matter the outcome. Job was plagued with boils. His wife wondered why he was calm about it. She told him to curse God’s name and die. Job persevered and told his wife that people only receive pleasant things from the hand of God and not anything unpleasant.

Job was visited by three of his friends after they had heard of the recent tragedies he had been plagued by. There names were Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. They sat with Job for seven days and seven nights and nobody spoke. Job finally spoke, but he cursed the day of his birth. He wished he had never been born or died as soon as he was born. His friends pleaded to him that God takes care of those who are good to him, and Job had been loyal to God his entire life. They urge him to go to God and confess his sins because God performs miracles all the time. They used examples in nature such as bringing rain to water the fields. Job wanted to end life at this point because of all the torment he had been through recently. He then questions God. He asks why God makes life tough like that of a slave. A man must struggle to live his life in a normal way.
Job continued to argue back and forth with his friend until God appeared in a whirlwind. God questioned Job and Job spoke back to God. Job finally realized that everything on Earth is God’s and he has no say over what happens. He then tells God that he was wrong with what he said to question him and his ways of making peoples lives the way they are. God then gave Job more than he had before all of this happened. He also was blessed with seven more sons and three more daughters and a happy life again.
This text does not offer a justification to the world. It says that you can live your life the way you want to as long as you don’t step out of line. There are many paths in the road of life that bring you to different destinations. This book says that God is always with us weather you believe or not. He recognizes those who treat him well and look at him as the highest. It doesn’t mean that you have to devote your life to God just acknowledge his existence. Another message this text has to say is don’t let people control your life. You follow what you believe in and that’s the path it will lead you down. If you let other people control your life you aren’t living it. Job’s friends and wife tried to persuade him to give up or just go confess to God. He didn’t have to do any of that because God came to him. He learned that everything happens for a reason.
