BREAKFAST FOODS
Morning, for me, is the worst part of the day. I always feel that I am missing many hours of sleep. I realize if I don’t wake up and go to where I don’t want to be, my job, I would no longer have a paycheck. The car would be repossessed; the dog would go to the pound, and the house would be foreclosed. I will have to wake up and go to work, and so I have to decide what to have for breakfast. Usually, the breakfast options are limited to cold cereals, hot cereals, and the artery clogging foods. It would help if the selection of breakfast foods were not so few.
The fastest and most popular breakfast food is cold cereal. There is a wide variety of name brands from which to choose. If you desire sweets, the choice is abundant. For example, Frosted Corn Flakes, made by Kellogg’s, is a grain cereal that consists of fine corn flour, sugar, corn syrup, calcium, and various other chemicals to preserve freshness. On the other hand, Honey Bunches of Oats is one of many choices for the health conscious. Manufactured by Post cereals, it is a grain cereal which also has a list of ingredients like corn, whole wheat, rolled oats, almond, rice, honey and brown sugar instead of processed sugar. You can cover up a bowl of cereal with banana slices or blueberries, but that’s where it ends. No matter what you use to cover up the bowl of cereal, it will become boring very fast.

A different option that may satisfy you in the morning is hot cereal. Not as popular as the cold cereal but just as fast, this breakfast food does not fall in the must have category. It does, however, warrant the respect of other healthy foods; it is nutritious and can lower cholesterol levels. The only problem is the assortment available. Usually, it is a very limited selection in the supermarket. The most popular is Quaker Oats. The ingredients are simple: 100% rolled oats. The oats can be prepared easily. With just two parts boiling water and one part oats, breakfast is ready. Another variety of hot cereal, grits, is the same in taste but very different in consistency. It is made up of ground wheat and salt. It comes in twelve packets to a box which makes it very handy. Grits are made in the same way as oats and just as fast. In fact there would still be time to prepare a bowl of corn flakes instead.
The last group of breakfast food is the greasy food group which includes the bacon, eggs, and their associates. This type of meal is not the quickest to make, but is the most desirable: The choices are endless. Topping it, of course, is bacon and eggs. Bacon comes in many different varieties, but also in different thicknesses, smoked and regular. Some bacon comes with less fat than others, but all comes with much more fat than it should. Eggs come in various sizes: small, medium, large, and extra large. They’re packed in half dozen, one dozen, or a baker’s dozen of eighteen to a carton. Eggs can be cooked in a number of ways, scrambled, hard-boiled, poached, pan fried, or made into omelets. For those who prefer a less healthy breakfast, a variety of sausage can be added to the menu. Pork sausage and Kielbasa sausage are the most popular. They can be baked or fried. However, this group of breakfast food contains too much fat and cholesterol and will clog arteries.
As the most important meal of the day, it looks as if breakfast could have more tempting choices. Cold cereal has a relatively good taste, but it uses too much sugar which has the power to change a tired person into a robot. Hot cereal, while healthy, does not hold its appeal for very long due to the bland taste and feel once it becomes cold. The artery clogging foods, however, lead over the rest, but because of the excessive amount of fat in these foods, they are not usually prepared in most homes. In addition, due to the lack of time in the morning, this time consuming meal cannot always be prepared. Why not make larger portions for dinner and you can have the leftovers for breakfast in the morning.
