Describe a challenging situation you’ve faced. Briefly state the situation, how you responded and why, would you have done anything differently, has it affected or shaped who you are today? When I was in 9th grade, I attended my first BBYO convention. It was Regional convention; the convention is a spirit convention for chapters to show off their chapter pride. On the second night of the convention, me and an old friend of mine went to the bathroom and saw this kid. My friend began to harass that kid, and then being the impulsive person I am joined along. After this debacle the kid told on us and we were sent home and suspended from the chapter for 4 weeks. Once my suspension was done, I came back to the first event I could go to, to show I was ready to be a leader. Though it was a very difficult time for me, due to many of my fellow brothers lost faith in me and gave me crap. I kept my head up because BBYO was doing me well and I knew I could surpass what I was going through. I had a positive mindset so the glass was always half full, never empty. I ran for executive board, attended every program, applied for a chair, and attend a summer program called Chapter Leadership Training Conference.
Though I still would be given a tough time, I knew with time and effort my perception would change towards my chapter. This incident really shaped me into who I am today. It taught me a lesson to stay away from those who negatively influence you, it taught me that making these mistakes are going to hurt me, and it taught me that if you keep your head up anything is possible. As you start your college career, what is your primary goal as a student and how have you prepared to meet this goal, how do you plan to succeed, how do you feel you will do at VCU? My primary goal as a student is to get involved with student organizations and make a strong impact on them, along with succeeding in school. I have prepared to meet this goal through my time in BBYO. I’ve spent the past 4.5 years delegating my time to this organization, attending almost every event possible, and seizing every opportunity at leadership that was available. I plan to succeed by applying everything I had learned during my time in BBYO, and by networking with my peers and learning their perspectives on leadership. All of this will happen if I am proactive and make each thing I want happen. At VCU I believe I would be extremely successful. I believe that if I work hard and do what I set out for myself here, I will excel in every sort.
