The over consumptions of material goods have overtaken society to the point where it has become a part of today’s necessity. But first of all, what is consumerism? Consumerism is the process of selling and promoting material goods which often leads people to obsessively consume vast amount of products. The concept of Consumerism however, have been negatively depicted within Bruce Dawe’s ‘Americanized’, ‘Televistas’ and a film ‘confessions of a shopaholic’ .
Bruce Dawe’s americanized satirises the predominance of consumerism on American values, the title itself is ironic as Dawe purposely uses American spelling to spell americanized, using the letter ‘z’ instead of ‘s’. The use of extended metaphor has been displayed in the poem to help us understand Dawe’s mockery and ridicule towards consumerism. The mother being America and the child representing Australia emphasises the American value systems. The poem rhetorically questions us “what child of simple origins could want more? ” implying that we Australians have become liable to America to an extent where we’ve lost our pride and individuality as we yearn for consuming goods even though we are sufficient with the resources supplied. The highlights of consumerism have been exposed to us as America welcomes us into their consuming paradise. “Mummy’s world contains from Pepsi- cola figurines to spams” which influences Australia to enter and follow their way of life causing us to lose our culture and identity.
This influence is further shown in Televistas. Dawe’s Televistas is shown to mock and exaggerate the false values on consumerism, the opening stanza “she was Sanyo orientated, he was rank arena bred” metaphorically shows us the status between the two individuals as their identity are diminished to that of consuming brands, meaning that our lives are labelled by American products. The irony emphasised throughout this poem is the use of television and its dominance within the young couple’s relationship.

The TV shows symbolises the couple’s relationship status. “They fell in love and shared a samboy, crunching in the afterglow” suggests that commercialism has enabled their love to develop which tells us that their love is very simple and superficial. The fact that the young couple have not yet an identity reflects back to today’s modern society and its existence. Dawe expresses to his viewers that today’s society and its relationships revolve around TV relevant where it has grown to become a part of our everyday life.
Similarly, the film ‘confessions of a shopaholic’ also negatively portrays the impacts on consumerism to individuals and society. The use of dialogue and the voice over of mothers whispering “its 50% off” implies that consumers are influenced to buy material goods due to the promotion of sale prices which affects our cultural understanding to consumerism as we believe everything we see.
The close up shot of the young girl in between the mothers, with sad facial expression and the panning across to the mothers with a bright cheerful smile, suggests that consumers and their way of viewing material goods are affected from what they were taught at a young age. The medium shot of Rebecca bloom wood as she walks down the street, panning to every store she walks pass implies that we are surrounded by consumerism and because we’re so used to seeing it, that we do not realise that it’s dominating our everyday life.
Consumerism have been negatively depicted within all three texts, americanized, Televistas and confessions of a shopaholic. Its dominance within modern society have greatly impacted individuals to develop an over excessive consumptions of goods causing us to lose our culture and beliefs. Like americanized, we are becoming dependent towards one another and are slowly losing our values as an individual.
