Cody left his home in Kansas at the age of eleven. Later he got the name Buffalo Bill from hunting, and that was when legends about him and newspaper articles were published about Cody. There were even dime novels (novels that were sold for a dime) that were sold that had myths about how he did amazing things and cut down forests. Some had myths about him cutting down forest because of the strength that he had. The wild west Cody was a buffalo hunter, Untied States army Scout, and an Indian fighter. Although he did all those things, Buffalo Bill was best known for being the man who gave the wild west its name.
Cody and Ned Buntline made a show together called The Scouts of the Plains. A lot of people thought the show and acting was ridiculous, but people still liked it because it was based on a genuine experience. In 1883, Cody came up with the idea for the Wild West show. It was an outdoor setting designed to educate and entertain. The Wild West show was a big deal. There was even a parade that included soldiers on horseback, Indians, cowboys, and horse-drawn carriages which all originated from the show.

Annie Oakley One of the main characters in the Wild West show was Annie Oakley nicknamed Little Sure Shot. She would be the sharp shooter of the show. She would shoot the edge of a playing card from far away, or shoot the ashes off the cigar that her husband, Frank, would be holding in his mouth. He hunted buffalo to feed the construction crews of the Kansas Pacific Railroad. He had killed 4, 280 head of buffalo in seventeen months.
Cody was once in a shooting contest against a hunter named William Comstock. The purpose of the contest was whoever won would earn the title to be called “Buffalo Bill” and Cody had won. Retirement Cody needed financing for his show and got a $20, 000 loan with a guy called Tammen. When the show arrived in Denver for a performance, the loan was due. Cody did not have the money with him at the time to pay it, and Tammen would not extend the loan. Because of this, Tammen ordered Cody to show in Tammen’s Sells-Flo to circus.
Buffalo Bill had never retired, but he really had hoped to do so. He did two years of circus, and at the end of that time, he found out he could not retire. Growing personal debts due to bad investment led him with no retirement. Cody’s Death Buffalo Bill had died on January 10, 1917.
