Chemistry Coursework Burning Candles Aim: To find out what effects how long a candle burns. Prediction: I predict that the less amount of oxygen that the flame has the less time it would stay a lit for. The flame gives out heat. The oxygen turns to carbon dioxide because of the carbon in the candle. The carbon dioxide formed puts out the candle. Method: Input Variable- We change the size of the beaker.
Outcome Variable- The time in which the candle takes to burn out. Variables kept making it a fair test- Same candle Pleistocene fully blocking air getting into the beaker Test three times to make sure we get the correct answer Wave beaker the same amount of times between each test List Apparatus- Candle Gas Jars Beakers Safety Mats Bunsen Burner Pleistocene Splint Stopwatch Gas Taps Matches Step by Step guide of what we will do and how we carry out the process- 1. Light the Bunsen burner using gas taps and matches 2. Cover the bottom area of the beaker with Pleistocene to make sure no air can get in. 3. Using a splint light the candle with the flame from the Bunsen burner.
4. Put the candle under the beaker 5. Time how long it takes to burn out using a stopwatch 6. Remove the candle once burned out and wave the beaker to remove any air substances from it. 7. Repeat with different size beakers.
We carried out the test and we discovered that the size of the beaker does actually effect how long the candle burns for.
