At the end of the cold war there were situations going on all around the world including Nicaragua, China and the Soviet Union. Bush also continued the economic embargo, which left the Nicaraguan economy in ruins. Ortega was forced to lay off 35, 000 government employees. Later he called off the nineteen-month-old cease-fire with the Contras because of Contra attacks in Nicaragua.
