Butte/Silver Bow County Montana began as a mining town for gold and silver, today it remains a mining town, not so much for gold and silver but copper and molybdenum. It is a medium sized town with 34,534 residents. MRI and St. James HealthCare are the largest employers in the county. The town has not grown over the past 20 years as evidenced by the higher death rate than birth rate. The population has spread from the urban to lower densely populated areas.
Butte for its size has the highest crime rate of all Montana’s major cities. Median household income is $37.346 7, 6% of the national average with 16.6% below poverty level. Most of the population has completed high school and some college. Senior citizens 60 + years comprise 71% of the homeowners. The high crime rate and high poverty level make neighborhoods unsafe for its residents. Young people are moving away from Butte for a better life style. (Hocking, 2010/).

The Essay on In Your Opinion Are Water Resources Over Or Undervalued In The United States

Many wild animals live in the area from Grizzle Bears to small rodents, mosquitoes, flies and other insects adding to the spread in disease and infection. Wild Fires are a yearly occurrence which adds to poor air quality. Smoke from Montana’s wild fires as well as from Canada and neighboring states creates poor air quality. Butte itself is in a bowl created from mining, smoke and other air contaminants settle there. Butte is the site for one of the largest super fund sites in the United States related to water and ground toxicity. It is estimated clean up will take until 2020 to put everything in place to keep the site from infiltrating ground water. The Berkley Pit was an open pit mining operation; the pit is now filled with run-off water from the operation.
The pH of the pit water is 2.5 making it very acidic, the water of the pit is toxic with heavy metals such as copper, zinc, cadmium, arsenic and sulfuric acid. This water is so toxic it kills anything that should fall into it. There are 17 super-fund sites in Montana and two of them are in Butte/Silver Bow County. The second is from the Montana Pole and Treatment Plant, a wood treating plant adding zinc, cadmium, arsenic, lead and sulfuric acid to the soil and ground water. (EPA Home,)
