‘…the celebrity status that comes with twenty-first century fame.’
Write a personal essay about your views on celebrities and being famous in the twenty-first century.
I sit here looking at pictures and reading articles about these celebrities we either admire or hate, wondering how it would be to be someone famous and we often imagine this in our heads but is it really what it’s made out to be? Well, the fascination with the lifestyles of the rich and famous has gone far beyond the usual interest that celebrities have generated over the years. In every shop in every part of the country, shelves are lined with glossy magazines with big, bold, headings capturing our interest as tales of woe, awe and scandal. We also see celebrities who appear on TV and at first we think that they are living the dream, but are they? A lot of us spend hours of our lives reading about these people’s lives but, gone are the days when celebrities grace the pages of magazines for their talent and random acts of charity, this new found interest in modern day celebrities goes beyond that! Their lives are an open book and every aspect of their lives is made available for us to scrutinise, criticise and enjoy. Being a celebrity in the twenty-first century has it’s positive aspects like the money, the fame and their privileges and also the negative aspects like, their lack of privacy and their lack of living a normal lifestyle.
Celebrities nowadays and completely different compared to their predecessors. Nowadays it does not take much to become famous and having everyone knows your name. I could get up tomorrow and decide I’ll audition for the next X-factor show and if I get through people will know my name everywhere, or if do something stupid on stage like a lot of people do, people will know me for that but I would still be in some way famous. Another example would be the way Justin Bieber got famous. He was made famous by putting up songs on YouTube like a lot of people do but Justin was discovered by Scooter Braun an American talent director, and Justin is now a worldwide celebrity.
The Essay on Media pays too much attention on famous people
Television, newspapers and other media tackle many issues such as various national and international news, namely sports, business issues and other events, as well as keep people updated with news about famous people. However in my view, nowadays the media spends an inordinate amount of time reporting on famous people. With the remarkable development of media, the personal life of a famous person ...
If you were to compare Frankie Cocozza and John Lennon you would see the difference from the 1960’s and the twenty-first century. John Lennon started the Beatles in 1960 but as the group disintegrated towards the end of the decade, Lennon embarked on a solo career. Lennon done very well for himself but was tragically murdered in 1980. We can see even now that John Lennon had great love for his work. The difference between celebrities nowadays and the likes of John Lennon back in the 1960’s is that the love of their talent has fallen. Frankie Cocozza appeared on the X-factor a few years ago and I remember sitting watching him and the TV thinking that he was a good singer and performer but he obviously didn’t care. After getting through to the live shows he got through the first five weeks but after this was kicked off the show for the use of drugs. This shows he didn’t care about his talent like they did back in the 1960’s because he was told at the start, like everyone else that by taking drug’s you would be eliminated from the show.
The main positive aspect of being famous in the twenty-first century is the money. If I had the money some of the celebrities have, I wouldn’t be stupid and blow it all like some of them end up doing. If they were smart they would find ways to keep themselves financially stable because they never know when their fame will end. The money is a positive aspect of being famous because it allows you to buy what you need or want, go wherever you desire, pursue your dreams and experience new things. They can have anything they have ever wanted and MORE! A lot of people, including myself, would love for even a fraction of the money they earn to be able to experience the feeling of being able to journey the imaginations of our minds.
The Essay on Negative Image Media Positive People
Frontline - Epitaph Mike Moore suggests that there is always a negative image of aborigines being portrayed and decides to try and make a positive documentary concerning aborigines. His comment that "It's nothing more than a cheap vehicle for screening negative images," tells the audience that he is frustrated that TV reports and articles in newspapers constantly show a negative image of ...
Another positive aspect of being a famous celebrity is the fame of course. A lot of people are attracted to the fame because it is having thousands, even millions knowing your name. I think it’s a bit over-rated just because there are good sides and bad sides to the fame, but, the good sides are definitely positive. I love watching the big events that celebrities often go to like The Premieres, and look at what all the female celebrities are wearing and imagining myself being there in an expensive dress and shoes. It is one thing a lot of people would love to attend, mostly for the experience.
One more positive aspect of celebrity fame is their privileges. This is where celebrities get special treatment because of their status in the likes of restaurants, nightclubs, pubs, shops etc. In most of these places they would get v.i.p areas, free champagne etc. To me it’s the total opposite because if a restaurant was booked up, that was it I couldn’t get a reservation whereas if I were famous the restaurant would definitely make room because they wouldn’t want a bad name, and wouldn’t turn down the chance of having a celebrity in their restaurant. Also when travelling, they would get the best seating, food and assistance, if they don’t already have a private jet. If this was me with my private jet I would fly to the Antarctic and see the penguins and polar bears.
Celebrities have a lot of power to ‘make a difference’ but a lot of them either don’t care or don’t realize it. Because so many people know them, they would listen. Some celebrities are role models to kids and adults and if they were to ask of something to do with making a difference it would more than likely be done. We have organisations that try to make a difference everyday and raise awareness but with the help of celebrities, it would make a big difference. An example of a developed organization is the ‘Marie Keating Foundation’ which is named after Ronan Keating’s mother who died of breast cancer and this raises awareness to women with the help of the celebrity status.
The Essay on Being Rich To Being Famous
I know that there are many rich and famous people such as movie star, Angelina Jolie, pop singer and actress, Jenifer Lopez, owner of The Apple Corporation, Bill Gates, Princess Diana and UK queen Elizabeth around the world. They became rich and famous is because of their talent, hardworking and creativity. Some of them are born with a silver spoon. Although, being rich and being famous have ...
As well as these positive aspects of being a celebrity in the twenty-first century there are the negative concepts to being famous.
The main negative aspect of being a celebrity is their lack of privacy. When you become famous one of the positive aspects is your fame of people knowing you but as I said there is also a bad side to this. From your fame, people know who you are, where you live and your friends and family. Everywhere you go you have the paparazzi following you and recording what you are doing day in, day out. This would not be my cup of tea, imagine me going to school after waking up late and having a bad hair day and then the next day my bad hair day is spread all over the front of a magazine, no thank you! With these pictures and information of, where you have been and with who that they get every day, they can publish this straight away as they please, with either the truth or they can stir it around and make a lie. This happens all the time to celebrities nowadays, their privacy is invaded and most of the time lies are made about them and this can destroy their fame. Celebrities cannot do anything without being critized and judged. Their life stories are up on the internet and once it’s up everyone can see it and it will always be there. I would not like this at all because all people make mistakes and with me they can be forgotten but if I was a celebrity and done the same mistake everyone would know and judge me over it for the rest of my life even though it was a misconception.
This lack of privacy can go to the extreme which is stalking. Celebrity stalkers have been around since movie stars first hit it big in the ’20s, and they’ve popped up regularly in headlines and in A-lister’s backyards ever since. This happens to a lot of celebrities in the twenty-first century and has been murdered in some cases, like John Lennon, he was murdered by a fan Mark David Chapman after his signing of his new album. Mark Chapman shot John Lennon in the back five times. This is scary to know it could happen to even celebrities. I wouldn’t want to have fans for this reason! This is the one thing that relates to the normal style of living because anyone can be stalked and murdered, but being famous is shining a light on your name more.

Another negative aspect to being a celebrity is not being able to live normal lifestyles because people are constantly coming up to you in public places asking for autographs and pictures. A lot of celebrities feel bad to say no but you get the odd ignorant one who does say no. When I was at my cousins wedding I met a lot of famous people like Craig Charles from Coronation Street, Paul McShane, John O’Shea, Stephen Hunt, Stephen Ward, and more and they were all so nice to get pictures and just to talk to in general.
In conclusion, being a celebrity in the twenty-first century it is not really all it’s said to be in my opinion, but is it for you? Some of these celebrities are living the dream but is it really worth it? With being a celebrity in the twenty-first century comes a price!
