At the start of the 20th century, the United States were experiencing many changes in the ways that their economics and politics operated. After the Civil War, Restoration, and the Gilded Age, the Progressive Era was a time the United States could establish the principles of the country and begin to build what America is today,. With large monopolies running the nation’s economy, such as those run by J.P. Morgan, Carnegie, Rockefeller, and Vanderbilt, many people sought Reformation and wanted to fix the problems of the country. The reformers, or Progressives, wanted to fix the corruption in the government, trusts, poor living and working conditions, and morals in the country. They also fought for conservation of forests, and the rights of blacks, women, and immigrants. The Progressives brought reformation to a national level. The efforts they made lasted nearly twenty years, and came with many successes and limitations.
There were many successes that came with reformation in the areas of industry. Muckrakers used McClure’s, a magazine, to expose the evils of society with journalism. Muckrakers included, Ida Tarbell, who targeted standard oil, Thomas Nast, who went after Boss Tweed, Jacob Ries, who sought help for immigrants, and Upton Sinclair whose descriptive passage on the meatpacking industry called, “The Jungle” exposed many horrors and allowed inspection. It was found that meat scraps were being shoveled from dirty floors into machines for chopping, and this was a way of gathering dirt, splinters, floor filth, and the diseases of the workers (Document B).

The father of the Muckrakers was Lincoln Steffen, who targeted the government as a whole. Along with this there was also false advertising in industry and false food and drug labels. When muckrakers brought this to peoples attention a Pure Food and Drug Act was passed to prevent any more deceiving products in industry. Some other issues that Progressives tried to eliminate were working conditions. Seen as may of the city youth were entered into factories at young ages (Document C) the issues socially from work were great and sprouted many Unions and strikes such as the Coal Miners Strike, some of these issues could be solved by workers, such as Jane Addams Hull House. These were some of the production issues that were resolved with the reformers effectiveness.
Many changes politically and economically occurred with the start of the 20th century. Many political parties such as the Deb and Progressive parties arose due to reformation. These parties debated on the issues of tariffs, working conditions, and most importantly, trusts. Roosevelt himself started the Progressive party due to the election of 1912, and was pretty successful although he lost to Wilson. As a former President, Teddy Roosevelt was known to have attacked all bad trusts. He even went after J.P. Morgan. Some of the acts that followed were the Clayton Anti-Trust Act, which strengthened the Sherman Anti-Trust Act. This act stated that it was unlawful to indirectly or directly discriminate in price when it may substantially lesson competition or tend to create a monopoly in any line of commerce (Document E).When Taft became President became President after Roosevelt he passed nearly 126 Acts against trusts, some of them being good ones. This was one of the setbacks for the reformers. These were just a few of the changes that occurred politically and economically due to the reformers efforts.
Many limits came with the Progressives efforts in reformation. The Progressives ran into problems with Blacks and women. The government did absolutely nothing to help out the African Americans, and there were not many supporters in women rights at the time. Although women did form social clubs in which they talked about education, housing, labor, and products. The NAACP was also formed for blacks, and was a combination of blacks and whites that wanted to help support black rights. These were some of the successes and limits of the Progressives during reformation.
