Minamoto Yoritomo created the, bakufu, a more centralized government lead by a powerful military leader known as a shogun who attempted to increase the powers of the central government. The shogunate system was based on an emperor who was the titular authority while the shogun exercised actual power. It worked very effectively and helped when the Mongols attempted to assert their hegemony throughout all of Asia. Japan refused the demand of tribute from Emperor Khubilai Khan, the refusal lead to an invasion of more than 30,000 troops. Weather conditions made the Mongols retreat until 1281, after the Japanese contained them for two months a massive typhoon destroyed the entire fleet of Mongols. After this invasion they did not face another one until American forces in 1945. A coalition of powerful clans overthrew the Kamakura shogunate in 1333. The daimyo controlled vast landed estates that owned no taxes to the government or to the court in Kyoto. The disintegration of the shogunate and the virtual destruction of Kyoto were due to a civil conflict called the Onin war.

Korea and China have always had a relationship that has been characterized by tension and conflict. Due to the very mountainous nature farming was probably not practiced in early Korea. At one point it is believed that the Han dynasty ruled Korea. After the fall of the Han three separate kingdoms formed, the Koguryo in the north, the Paekche in the southwest, and the Silla in the southeast. The Chinese had the most influence on the Koguryo. The Silla started out to be the weakest power but later became the dominant power. After accepting tributary status under the Tang dynasty to pacify the Chinese, all other southern Japanese colonies were eliminated. They tried to create a centralized state based of the Chinese; but because they did not adopt the full model it was fatal, erupting in a civil war. The Koryo dynasty finally adopted Chinese political institutions in attempt to centralize its territory and strengthen its power. Like Japan, they had trouble with dominating influential aristocratic families. Slaves, artisans and other specialized workers composed the chonmin class. The Mongol eventually seized the northern part of the country. They brought new ideas into Korea and allowed the Koryo survive but under Mongol authority.

Vietnam was under Han rule. The Trung sisters were widows of local nobles who had been executed by the Chinese; they led a revolt that briefly brought Han rule to an end. After the fall of the Tang dynasty the Vietnamese overthrew Chinese rule and formed a new Vietnamese state called Dai Viet.
