Cheju Island, blessed with such natural scenery, is well known as the ?Honeymoon? island and has also been called an island of Fantasy and the Home of Gods. Cheju Island is famous as a Mecca for honeymooners, and the island?s sightseeing spots are often crowed with young married couples. It’s also the nation’s most popular tourist destination, a warmer home to beaches, forests and the volcanic Mount Halla, at 6,435 feet (1,950 meters), the country’s highest peak. History dwells here, too. Mongol invaders bred horses on the island seven centuries ago. Shipwrecked Dutch sailors landed in 1653 and, after enduring more than a decade of captivity, escaped to bring the West its first accounts of the mysterious Korean peninsula. Traditionally, in contrast to the Korean peninsula, women have had an equal role as breadwinners on the island. Cheju’s most famous workers are several thousand women who dive in wet suits for sea urchins and abalone. But the tradition is fading. The island’s savvy money-making today disguises an often unhappy past. It was once a penal colony and home of exiles, including the 17th-century King Kwanghaegun, who was ousted and forced to drink a bowl of lethal poison by his usurpers.
Tens of thousands of people died in a 1948 communist uprising against Syngman Rhee, who soon took power as president from an American military government. Two years later, Soviet- and China-backed communist North Korea invaded South Korea, which was supported by U.S.-dominated forces of the United Nations. That war dragged on for three years. Cheju Island has been developed as a tour city even though it has painful past. I found some travelogues that depict what they saw what they felt with their own experiences. I will also analyze those travelogues what Cheju Island gives significances to them and why they call the island of Fantasy. I read Lee, Sun-Mi?s travelogue that I can debate her identity and experience. She is 28 years old employed woman. According her travelogue, the purpose of going to Cheju Island is to see beautiful beaches in Cheju Island. She said, ?I feel like Cheju always far from my home, there are many beaches that I can see all the times, and going by flight?. Most of all, one of biggest reason to decide to go to Cheju Island is because of movie, which is ?yeon-poong-yeon-ga?. The movie made her fell into imagine of love story. She felt like she could meet handsome imagined guy in Cheju Island.

Indeed, she was going to meet her ex-boy friend after traveling so, she thought she needed to have a spare time to relax and organize her mind before meeting her ex-boy friend. Most people who have a plan to go to Cheju Island have a same purpose. They have fantastic impressions of Cheju Island before going to Cheju Island and imagine Cheju Island is exotic place, which is totally different from mainland such as palm tree, weather condition, and using Cheju?s dialect. Most of them that Cheju Island has those special conditions cannot be seen in mainland. When she was about to get out of Cheju Airport, she felt she was in different world because of palm trees. Palm trees made her impression of Cheju as a exotic site. She had watched the palm trees only on T.V., and palm tree lives only tropical foreign countries such as Hawaii or other tropical islands. It is also symbol of tropical islands that most Korean people have imagined.

When she came to hotel, she could not sleep at all even she was so tired because of strange place and expectation of touring.

Next day, she decided to go to ?U-Do? among many places to go. While she was on the way to U-do, she felt that the sunshine of Cheju is very clean and warm. The fantasy that she had maintained drove her more wonder side. While she took a bus, she saw many black basalt stones that was built for house wall. It is one of famous possession in Cheju Island and being spread out all over the place. The black basalt stone made her existed in Cheju Island, too. When she arrived at U-Do, she realized this was U-Do because of signboard. The name, U-Do, is come from ?Island of Cow?. Many cows were raised long time ago, but she could not see cows at all during taking a trip. She said, ?U-Do is very beautiful place ever I visited and it is good place I can relax without any complicated thinking that is coming from urban city life?. U-Do, unlike from urbanized place, gives unique power to tourists because it is undeveloped place, people who live in there have kept and maintained beautiful natural scenery as itself where she cannot see in the urban city at all. Even she described the seawater of U-Do different from Cheju. According her description, it is said, ?the seawater is even darker than any color of seawater. It looks like the sea was dissolved by dark-blue color paint?. The significance of seawater in U-Do gives fresh, unique, calm, and powerful impression to her.
When she went to a restaurant, she realized again that the taste of food in Cheju was not delicious all the times even it was expensive. She thought Cheju people had different taste or did not interesting in cook. She also thought it was because of island that had short of food resources as compared to mainland. When she went to ?Sung-San Il-Chul-Bong?, she watched the ocean again and compared to the ocean in U-Do. And she asked herself what is meaning of the ocean to her. She answered that ocean is like a soft drink, which quenched her thirst all the times and ocean always gave comfortable feeling to her. She portrayed that oceans had different identities at different places. While she was on the way to hotel by bus, she saw many students who spoke Cheju dialects in the bus. Using dialects between students gave an impression to her in strange world. She felt she was in foreign county. Dialects are another agent that makes her exotic emotion in Cheju Island. She even described the Cheju dialects as a ?strange language?. Even though they spoke in Korean, she could not understand at all. It was enough to feel the reason that Cheju Island was far from mainland. Next day, she went to ?Pyo-Sun Folk village? and ?Choong-Moon Beach?.

While she went by bus, she got strong impression of Cheju bus drivers. She depicted that the bus drivers were very kind unlike bus drivers in Seoul. She felt that people in Cheju still have humanistic side unlike from urban city such as Seoul. Indeed, she wanted to live the place where human feelings existed like Cheju Island. When she arrived at Pyo-Sun Folk Village, she saw the ?Tol-ha-ru-bang?, which is the symbolic statue of Cheju Island in front of the gate. As she has known, Tol-ha-ru-bang is one of gods, who protect Cheju Island so, it is everywhere in front of the gate. When she was at Choong-Moon Beach, she felt that the beach was very clean, calm, and beautiful place. Indeed, she saw some foreign people who enjoyed sun tanning at the seashore. Those foreign people did not look strange to her because she still fell into the fantasy of Cheju that made her illusion of foreign country. After taking a trip at Choong-Moon Beach, she went to Cheju city. She found out there were not many fast food restaurants such as KFC, Mc Donald?s, and Berger King etc. She realized that even Cheju city had not been urbanized yet even though there were many tourists at Cheju city. She thought all of these made the island of fantasy and looked more beautiful as natural itself. While she was looking around the city, she saw the license plate number of the car, which came from Seoul. She was very happy. The license plate number of Seoul gave her identity of her hometown. When she saw the plate, she felt she was belonging to Seoul citizen. If she is not Seoul Citizen, she did not feel any membership of Seoul.
The Essay on History of Pangkor Island
In past times; this area used to be the center for piracy. The pirates had their home ports in the Pulau Gedung Hills, Gua Lanun (Pirates’ Cave) and Batu Perompak (Pirates’ Rock) on the island of Pangkor. Many ships/boats were taken over and robbed of their goods and products. The Dutch were active here in the times of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). People were especially keeping ...
When she arrived at Cheju University, she also saw the Tol-ha-ru-bang in front of the gate. The University is located at middle of mountain so it is very large place as compared to her university. When she got out of the university, she met a university student who looked very old. He is 31-year-old student of freshman. As he told that he graduated and worked at Seoul about three years, but he could not see his bright future, so he decided to study again for his future within 10 years. After she met him, she started thinking about who she was, where she came from. She tried to find out her identity. She worried about her future, too. She thought she was old enough to get married and had some plans to do such as study abroad. After seeing Cheju University, she went to Cheju Airport in order to catch a flight to Tae-Gu where her ex-boy friend lived. She was little bit afraid of seeing her ex-boy friend. It had been about one and half year to see each other. When she saw him, he welcomed her with smile face, and they went to some beautiful caf? where had a nice night view of Tae-Gu city. She felt that Tae-Gu was unlikely totally different from Cheju that gave an impression of fantasy. The city is already urbanized and complicated.
After taking a trip, she had a time to look back in order to find her identity and decided to think her life within 10 years because of the Cheju University student. So, what Cheju Island gives to her during trip? What is significance of Cheju Island to her? Cheju Island gave its identity to people as an island of fantasy through natural environment. Also Cheju Island that she had looked through was an exotic site of island. Many natural types of scenery made her illusion of foreign country and gave her identity, reflection of her past time, and plans for her future. Here is another travelogue that I am going to analyze. This travelogue is very similar as Lee, Sun-Mi?s travelogue. The writer is 30-year-old businessman. The purpose of his trip to Cheju Island that he wanted to get out of his work and find his identity. So, he selected to take a trip by bicycle. Taking a trip by bicycle gave many meanings to him. First, he could test his ability to overcome in his life through difficult trip. Second, he could see Cheju Island in detail. Third, he could find his identity through his trip. His trip plan was similar as Lee, Sun-Mi?s. He drove along the coast freeway. When he arrived at Choong-Moon Beach, he saw the horizontal line of sea.

He felt that the horizontal line of sea gave him some kind of unlimited world and encouraged him a tacit challenge toward outside of his world. Also, he prayed his satisfied family and family health. After seeing the beach, he went to Pyo-Sun Folk village. He felt that some kind of spiritual world when he saw the Tol-ha-ru-bang statue in front of the gate. So, he bought the little Tol-ha-ru-bang statue as an amulet to avert evils. Tol-ha-ru-bang statue of Cheju signified to him spiritual satisfaction from his work. I think Tol-ha-ru-bang statue gives various meanings to each person who has different expectation. When he drove along the coast freeway, he saw the ?Haenyo? or female divers whose lives revolve around the water where they harvest abalone, conch, and a myriad of other marine products. He descried the Haenyo as independent career women unlike urbanized women. Tanned face and skin, wearing black diver?s suits, and speaking dialect language all of their appearance gave different impression to him. They did not look like Korean women that he had known so far. He thought that Haenyo is special given character from Island of fantasy.
When he finished bicycle trip, he climbed Mt.Halla, which is the highest peak in South Korea. This place is the last his challenging spot in his trip. When he approached to peak, it was about time to sunset. Looking down to the Cheju Island is the most beautiful scenery ever he saw. Cheju Island is a place of myths and legends and an international sightseeing resort with abundant natural resources to the tourists. Cheju Island also tempts to people with many exotic environments such as Tol-ha-ru-bang, black basalt stone, and beautiful coral oceans. All of these are structural elements of island of fantasy. I did not even know the Cheju?s unhappy history and I just took a trip for fun.
