A seven-year old boy had been admitted into the intensive unit over a dozen times since the age of three. The child had suffered various internal injuries from his stepfather’s punches and kicks to his stomach. One time the boy’s unstable mother slashed his cheek with a butcher knife and cut a portion of the child’s left ear. Child abuse that results in death is unfortunate, not as uncommon as most people would like to believe. There are many different types of abuse; they include sexual, mental, verbal, physical and emotional.
Children often are referred to as being our greatest natural resource. One of the greatest challenges of society today is necessity of protecting children from emotional and physical abuse (Ito 12).
Children are most vulnerable members of society. The abused child is denied this support and security. Many have been subjected to traumas of physical abuse, whipped, beaten, or subjected to other forms of physical mistreatment. The trauma of being physically or mentally abused as a child can affect an individual for the rest of his or her life. Because many children are taught at an early age that parents and other grown ups what is best for them.
Social workers can proceed in many ways. A physician has legal authority to hospitalize young people who may have been abused. They can be hospitalize for up to twenty-two hours to allow time for physical examination and investigation. If investigation authorities conclude that a young person is endangered they have authority to take him or her into protective custody (Ito 22).
