In NSW, approximately 2% of the population identify as Aboriginal. The rate of reporting 317. 9 per 1000 for Aboriginal children and young people, and 76. per 1000 for non-Aboriginal children and young people. Approximately 32. 1% (as of June 2009) of children and young people in OOHC are Aboriginal.
(Wood Report, 2008; Community Services, 2010) In NSW, child protection reports jumped from 159,643 in 2001/02 to 309,676 in 2008/09. OOHC has a similar increase, rising from 9,273 in 2002 to 16,524 in 2009. The increases are reflective of a global trend attributed to growing awareness in the community, changing attitudes to child abuse and neglect, and forensic process of child protection. Community Services, 2010) In 2007 two separate shocking incidents of child deaths sparked a special commission of inquiry into the child protection services in NSW. There was a Child protection services inquiry completed in Nov 2008 called the Wood Report. It was a three volume report containing 111 recommendations. (see hand out for more information) A government action-plan was announced in March 2009, accepting 106 of the recommendations from the Wood Report. Recently, ideas framing child protection in a public health model are more preventative and collaborative.
