Although the vast majority of the world population positions itself as highly religious people, the issue of church discipline in the modern society becomes one of the most complicated issues. This may be partially explained by the fact that although, positioning itself as a religious and moral community the modern population acknowledges the necessity and positive influence of church discipline, some of population adheres to the opinion that church discipline imposes unnecessary boundaries that have negative influence on people’s lives. On the one hand, church discipline tends to be primarily emerged on the certain basis for the well-being, preservation, and strengthening of the society for itself. At the same time, some people claim that as far as church discipline emerged many centuries ago, its value should be reexamined in compliance with the modern conditions of the modern world. In such a way, there are several assumptions to be made before we will continue examining the issues of church discipline and its ethical and biblical sides. First, it should be taken into consideration that the historical practice of church discipline has been affected and shaped predominantly by the private ethic issues of the earlier times, when the people were more isolated from the society and community. In this respect, while examining church discipline it should be taken into account that the modern conditions are significantly different from those of the earlier days, as the modern people are not isolated, but rather more engaged in social activity, and they tend to take more and more active participation in society.

In order to examine the issue of church discipline and the influence it has on society in relation to various issues (for example, the issue of alcohol), the author of the present study has spent the last two summer with St. Austell church in Cornwall. During the given time the author had an opportunity to observe, to learn and to experience the life of the given church. The experience was quite useful, as it allowed developing both an outward- and inward-looking understanding of church discipline, and the ethical side of church discipline and consumption of alcohol. The Problem As it was already mentioned, the issues of church discipline nowadays can be partially explained by the ethical struggles in the life of the church today. Therefore, it is important to examine both the biblical and ethical sides of church discipline in order to gain better understanding, to recognize possible.
