Smoking among teens has been increasing rampantly. Despite what we know about the dangers of cigarette smoking many teens continue to smoke for a variety of reasons. There are many reasons why adolescents are picking up the smoking habit, one of which is peer pressure. It is common knowledge that if a teen is hanging out with an individual or group of friends who are smoking, he/she may get pressured into smoking when offered a cigarette. They want to fit in so that they don’t get teased or even feel ashamed because they refused to smoke the cigarette. Promotion or availability of cigarettes is also another way teens get influenced. By watching adults such as relatives, parents, aunts and uncles smoke, teens could also pick up the vibe. In their minds they could be thinking, “If they can do it, why can’t I?”
Even a role model could influence youth into this practice. Being a role model to a child/teen means that you are to set an example for them and whatever you do they are going to think is okay for them to do as well, even if what you are doing is wrong. If they see you smoke a cigarette, they are going to want to do it to because they see you doing it. Accessibility to cigarettes is another reason why teens become so fond of smoking. It has become so much easier to buy cigarettes now than it used to be. They are selling them everywhere from the corner store, grocery or pharmacy store like Walgreens, to people on the street selling a “loosey” (an individual cigarette) out of their house for 50 cents. Believe it or not a lot of people under age of 19 are using fake IDs to buy packs out of stores that require an ID.
The Essay on Teen Smoking Smoke People Smokers
By: Jesse E-mail: Teen Smoking Teen smoking. Those two words mean a lot of things to a lot of different people. To some it means nothing. They are just two meaningless words found under T and S in the dictionary. To others it is as if these words symbolize some sort of treason or crime against society. Yet to others it is just another stereotype to be placed under. And to some it is a salvation. ...
Because fake IDs are becoming more difficult to make out, people think they are real. This makes it easier for teens to get a cigarette quicker without realizing they are picking up a bad habit. Some people wonder about the long term effects of smoking. One effect could be addiction. Most teens that start smoking may have a hard time quitting. Their bodies become so used to the nicotine, that smoking becomes a habit. Another consequence could be health issues. The heart, lungs, and airways become damaged. Multiple health issues could develop from the use of tobacco such as emphysema, heart disease, deadly diseases like leukemia, lung, kidney and pancreatic cancers.
Not all effects of smoking occur due to smoking for a long period of time. Dental health problems are one example. Smoking cigarettes can cause one to have bad breath, yellow teeth, even cavities. Along with causing smelly breath, smokers tend to be smellier in general due to the smoke clinging to their hair and clothes. Another outcome linked to smoking is bad skin and wrinkles, both due to a lack of essential nutrients for the skin. The only way to prevent the negative effects of smoking would be to stop smoking all together. Some say giving up smoking is difficult, but I started the cigarette habit a little over a year ago, and quit a little over three weeks ago. I know if I can stop the bad habit of smoking, others can to.
