After contacting and obtaining the approval from the principle of the Canyon Breeze Elementary, I proceeded to the school. The 5th grade classroom had about 40 students. This was one of three 5th grade classes at Canyon Breeze. Darrell informed me that the school was going into the spring break the following week and the students would only be attending half days for the week. The students made their way into the classroom, greeting each other of 5th graders would. All the students greeted Darrell in a respectful manner, some inquired of my presence in the classroom.
Darrell informed everyone that I was there just to observed. I took my place in the rear of the class. As the class period was about to begin, Darrell asked the students to get to their seats to begin their school day. The students quick acknowledge their teacher’s request. As all the students stood by their seat they recited the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the school’s pledge. After which, the monitor came on and the daily announcements were given. There was no problems with students, no disturbance of any kind.
The classroom management was perfect. We later discussed the issue of classroom management. Darrell informed me that his established rapport with the students came from how he treated them. The students just followed the rules of the morning that were basically instilled in them by routine. The class settled in. There was a movie to be shown later in the day and they had the opportunity to choose the movie. After which, Darrell began with an English lesson. It was short, some reading by the students and some reaffirmation from Darrell.
The Essay on Tapes Of The Classroom School Auburn Day
This article caught my attention due to the fact that I have been a substitute teacher for two years. When I decided that vet school was not for me after two years of undergraduate study in Zoology, I wanted to go back to my dream. I wanted to teach. Instead of jumping into a curriculum without knowing whether I wanted to continue it or not, again, I became a sub instead. I absolutely loved it. I ...
Darrell had to some individual attention to some of the students. The English lesson was short, something that they began previously. Darrell instructed the students to put away their English workbook and to take out their Math workbook. The students were treated to a lesson in factions, addition and subtraction of fractions. A series of math problems were written on the white board. Students were asked to solve them. As they worked the problems in their workbooks, Darrell walked around and provided instruction and, again, some affirmation of the work.
I found that to be a positive in the learning process. A few minutes past, and students were asked to go to the white board and solve the problems. There were some difficulties. But after some guidance the lesson was completed. The bell rang and the students got up from their seats and were led out to their recess area. At time Darrell and I had a conversation/interview concerning the goings on of his classroom. Darrell told me that the job of teaching was a wonderful experience.
His biggest concern was the recent increase of the size of the class. Lack of funding had caused the elimination of a 5th grade class. Going from four to three classes, but no decrease in the students to fill those rooms. I also asked Darrell if all the students retained the material presented to the class. Did the students learn what they needed to know? Darrell informed ne that no, the students didn’t retain the information needed. There were several reasons for this problem. Some students didn’t come to his class ready for 5th grade work.
Not having the mental capacity for the material they needed for that level. Darrell informed me that he worked with them and at the end of the school year they would go into the 6th grade. I asked if they would be ready for the 6th grade after he was done with them. Darrell regrettably told me that some students would proceed to the 6th grade not totally prepared. He just could so much before they had to pass them through to the next level. The consequences of holding a student back would be too difficult on the student if they didn’t proceed.
As I looked back on this classroom observation, I believe that most important factor to being a teacher at this level is that the students should fell a sense of accomplishment. Students should feel good when they enter the classroom room environment. They can do their assigned work and through the teacher’s affirmation of their work, the students leave the classroom wanting to return. All the students in Darrell’s class were different. The students had different needs with different learning styles. Some needed more individual instruction, some didn’t. Darrell’s style of teaching catered to the class’s needs.

Other students prefer classes where students do some of the talking. Which type of class do you prefer? Give specific reasons and examples to support your choice.
