Coach Carter is a story of a dedicated basketball coach who puts his undefeated team on a lock out due to their bad academics and disrespectful behavior. He went to extreme measures to see his students excel and be successful in their lives. The film was released January 15, 2005. It was directed by Thomas Carter and co-produced by MTV Films and Tollin/Robbins Production. Coach Carter although an inspiring story of a dedicated basketball coach, some elements of the story strayed away from the true events and were added for entertainment purposes.
Although the movie Coach Carter added some things to make the film more entertaining, for the most part besides minor things were mostly accurate. “”I believe in this movie,” he said. ”I was there every day of the shoot and worked with the writers and producers. ” (www. espn. go. com).
Ken Carter, who the movie was inspired by, helped with providing accurate information to put in the story. For the most part the movie is about a man who used unconventional methods to get his team to perform well academically and athletically.
In the film, just the same as it really happened Carter closed down the gym and forfeited a few games because of some of his players’ bad academics. During the lockout they were put on contracts. The contracts stated that the must participate in daily study hall, keep a 2. 3 GPA and wear ties on game day, and do a certain amount of pushups and wind sprints before practice. (www. espn. go. com) Some of the inaccuracies of the movie were minor things and were added for a better story line. In the movie, the school board and school personnel are opposed to his lockout.

In the film the principal of the school was the “bad guy”, the “villain” so to speak. In the real story the principal was supportive of Carter’s ideas and plans.
The reason for that is that every story needs a villain or antagonist. And the story wouldn’t have the same effect if “hero” didn’t have a few battles to fight. Or a few nemesis to defeat. Also on reel life, after the lockout was ensued the players cleaned up their acts and improve their grades and are able to play in a bout a week. But in real life the lockout lasted eight days and was called off. “The lockout lasted eight days, costing the team one non-conference game and one game against alumni.

But some things were a few if Hollywood’s trick to create a better storyline, a more engaging tale that leaves an everlasting impact on your lives. Without that additive touch that Hollywood threw into this story line, the film would have been totally different.

There wouldn’t be that feeling of awe for Carter and the work that he did with his students. So the creator’s few artistic changes took this movie to what could have been seen as “Oh, which was good I guess” to “Wow! What an awesome, dedicated man Carter is. We need more people like him in the world. ” I believe that the writers wanted to expose the real hard work and dedication Carter put into his basketball players but also make him more of a hero. Come on who doesn’t love an awesome hero?
