Communication in natural language involves reasoning based on not only logical relations, but also contextual information and human intention. Quite often, dependence on the latter goes so far that pure logic can be overridden. As a consequence, we derive implicatures —meanings that are not intrinsically part of the linguistic forms used. The fact that we can generally derive the communicated implicatures presupposes that conversation hinges on some general principle or logic.
Therefore, we need to discover the “logic” of conversation(as opposed to formal logic) in order to answer the question of how hears can manage to understand speakers’ meanings, especially implied meanings.
