General Introduction
My portfolio, “The Effects of Photo-Manipulation on Teenagers’ Self-perception” consists of a reflection, expository and analysis. photo manipulation is the application of image editing techniques to create an illusion or deceive someone. The portfolio’s purpose is to educate teenagers about the effects that photo-manipulation may have on their self-perception. In the reflection, I explored the negative effects of photo-manipulation on a teenager whose low self-esteem led to a negative body image. My reflection helped me to achieve my purpose by showing the intended audience that when teenagers with low self-esteem are bombarded by manipulated images, they are prone to altering their bodies using shady methods. In the expository, I developed my theme by exploring the negative effects of photo-manipulation such as depression, low self-worth and unhealthy diets.
The theme relates to my academic interests because Communication Studies aided my understanding of the messages sent by non-verbal graphics and improved my communication with teenagers affected by edited images. It also relates to my work interests since I intend to become a software engineer and graphics artist. By understanding the impact of the manipulated photos, I can share my knowledge with teenagers. My theme selection was motivated by several incidents I read about where teenagers developed eating disorders because of photo-manipulation. As a photoshop hobbyist, I desire to help such teenagers since photo-manipulation should not be used to deceive others.

Preface
The purpose of “Jenna’s Misconception” is to inform teenagers both male and female, of the effects photo manipulation may have on their self-perception. In particular, this piece would be more suitable for teenagers with low self-esteem who are easily influenced by what the world calls the ideal look. However this story may help this age group to not be led on when reading magazines, with these flawless models. The targeted teenagers are within the age group of thirteen to eighteen as this is the time when most teenagers are influenced by peer pressure. In addition, the piece could be found in a youth magazine such as articles related to teens self-perception, on a school website or in a school papers such as in the section where there are stories written by students. Also it can be used effectively in counseling, where the guidance counselor can tell the teenagers the story or give them the story to read.
Reflective – Jenna’s Misconception
Jenna was a short, chubby girl with black short curly hair. She always wore oversized dresses with fruity styled patterns. Some of the boys in her class would tease her about the fruits on the dresses. Jenna found herself making up excuses for her friends when she stayed at home from the school activities. All that changed after what had happened last term for the Christmas dance. It was a hot and sunny day at school and it was the beginning of Jenna’s last year in high school. She had now entered form five with the school Christmas Masquerade ball coming up. She knew it was her last chance to try to go to the dance since she would be soon leaving school after writing CXC. Kevin was the only boy in class who did not make fun of her.
Kevin asked her, “Com leh we go to di dance, nah?”
She stumbled over her words while asking him, “Do you really want to go with me?”
He kept nodding his head.
Then she replied, “Yes, Ah would like to go with you.”
Later that day Jenna bought a magazine at the store. When she reached home she began to read it and stumbled upon an article that talked about the ideal look for teenagers. As she saw the picture of the girl in the magazine, she frantically looked at her reflection in the mirror while glancing back at the picture in the magazine. The phone rang. “Hello,” Jenna answered.

“Hey, girl!” It was her best friend Ariel, “Yuh goin tuh de dance?”
Jenna hesitated then said, “Yea, yuh wouldna believe it. Kevin ask meh.”
“Talk di truth girl!”
“It ain’t no lie.”
Ariel squealed and Jenna counldn’t stop the wide grin. “So yuh could help meh get ah makeover?”
“Doh worry, Ah hear bout some websites that could help yuh get de ideal look. Hook it up nah.”
One hour later, Jenna discovered the perfect website: Instalook, Pictures flashed on the computer screen. They were before and after of women eith facial scars and acne who now had smooth skin. They looked prefect. Jenna knew that this was the miracle product for her and she came up with a plan to get money to purchase it. With $500, Jenna could get a dress and the Instalook products. So she decided to ask her mother.
“Excuse me, mom.”
Her mother looked up from her crossword puzzle and removed her glasses “Yes, Jenna.”
“Well, there’s a dance on Friday but I need to get a dress. May I have $500 please? I want to go really bad and I have a date.”
Her mother’s face lit up like a Christmas tree. She was surprised, “Who are you going with?”
Jenna told her mother about Kevin until her mother was equally excited, “I will give you the money in the morning.” The next day bright and early she brought the items needed for her makeover. After hours of trying different hair products and facial masks, she was finally finished and ready to take a rest. It was finally the day of the dance, the day that Jenna had awaited. Kevin called to tell her that he would meet her at the dance instead of at home. Jenna was excited and ready for the dance. Her clothes were already prepared and ironed. She planned to wear a masquerade mask. She finally left for the dance feeling a little anxious. When Jenna entered the dance no one recognized her but they were all stunned in amazement by the way she was looking. Kevin did not recognize either. He was so taken back by her that he could not answer when she shyly said “Hi.” When she said his name and hugged him he snapped back to reality and said, “Jenna dat is you girl?” She smiled and said, “Yes.” While dancing Jenna began to feel a like sick and fatigued. Suddenly she fainted.
The Term Paper on Psychological View On Modern Dance

Upon hitting the floor her mask fell off revealing her swollen face. When she came to there was a crowd around her just staring at her face. She got up and ran outside. Kevin chased behind her. Crying she asked him to take her home. When Jenna reached at her home she thanked Kevin for asking her to go to the dance with him. She went inside to her parents and explained to them what she had tried to do and why. When her mother found out that she lied she told her, “Haul yuh blasted tail in yuh room.” Her parents went on the internet to get some information on the products used. While reading the information they saw that some of the products were not legit and had a lot of side effects. The facial mask had ingredients that Jenna was allergic to. Her parents explained to her that some of the photos in magazines could be fake or real. Her parents told her that she shouldn’t let people’s opinion of her change the way she viewed herself. After her face had recovered and everything was back to normal, she decided that she would go on a real diet, eat more healthy foods and also exercise, and that she would not care about what people thought about the way she looked anymore.
