I didn’t know what to expect of our Community Leadership class at the beginning of the semester. I knew what the words community and leadership meant and that the community I came from was a small one, but that was the extent of it. Every week I learned new information from the readings and more importantly through participation in our extensive class discussions. It really opened my eyes to the relationships that exist within our world. I started to realize that communities are everywhere; they just need to be recognized. My future plans are to graduate the University of Minnesota with some type of business degree and hopefully gain some type of position at a large corporation or company. The information I gained from this class will help me to enjoy, be successful, and bring my sense of community knowledge to the company that chooses to hire me in the future.
I feel that my experience from this class will help me in my future, by first obtaining the position I desire. Having a sense of community with people in the business world will help me in gaining this opportunity. A large part of the business world is not only what you know, but also more importantly who you know and the recommendations they give for you. If you were to intern for a particular company and they liked your work they may give a good recommendation to your next employer. From what I have learned about developing community will hopefully benefit me in this respect. I feel that I can develop a sound sense of community with my co-workers and boss in the jobs I’ll have in college, which will help me later with my career choice. The way I’ll try to do this is to treat everybody with respect and let others into my community.

I feel that a big part of becoming a community is letting your self into one, or letting down your guard to get to know other people. Many people fear having to meet new people and letting others see who they really are. I feel that if my co-workers and boss can see the real me, they will develop this sense of closeness, or community. Once this sense of community is developed they will feel good about me and I will feel good about them. This can not be accomplished unless both sides are willing to let it happen though.
Once I receive a job from a company I will try to bring this sense of community I’ll have with me. I feel that community inside the office is a very important aspect of the business world. Almost every type of business career: accounting, finance, marketing, or advertising, rely on group work to get things accomplished. As an accountant you would be working in a small group to figure out the financial status of some business or organization. The majority of work in marketing or advertising would be group related, trying to figure out what people want to buy and how to intrigue them to do so. All of these careers require good people skills and the ability to work together. This is why I feel that community within the office is essential. With my background from this class, I feel that I will bring an important aspect to any company that would be interested in employing me. I would introduce the idea and importance of community within the workplace, if I felt it wasn’t already as strong as it could be.
From what I picked up from the readings and our discussions, my definition of community is the relationships that we have with the people who are the most involved in our lives. When we move into the next step after college to a full-time working position the people we work with will be the ones that we spend the majority of our time with, or our new community. If a positive sense of community is not there, how will we have enjoyable lives? Personally, I don’t think we can. If people are unhappy with the relationships they have with the people they consider themselves closest to, they will probably become very distant and lonely. If this happens to a person with a job that functions primarily in a group setting it could mean disaster for that employee and also for that company. Bringing a sense of community into the workplace will create a more enjoyable place to work, which will lead to better productivity.

The way I would try to involve community in the workplace would be to get together outside of work and create friendships. Since the time at work would be very strenuous and stressful, negative feelings might begin to exist within the workplace. By getting together outside of work where the people could relax and not have to worry about work will help created the closeness that I feel is essential.
Another way to bring this sense of community into the workplace would be to get together everyday before the actual work begins for as little as a half an hour and discuss issues that don’t pertain to work. This could be how their family life is going or the troubles they may be experiencing in some other part of their lives. This will bring the work force closer together because they are talking on a more personal level that doesn’t relate to the struggles of work. I feel this would work because of what I saw happen in our own class. It occurred after the class when we shared our most prized possession. People began to see the personal side of everybody else in the class, which gave a warmer sense of community between us.
An aspect of the business world, outside of the office, that has to have a good sense of community is with clients or other companies. I feel that I can bring this quality to an employer after my experience with my theatre class because I know what it takes to develop a sense of community with people you may not know. If a sense of community is developed between clients and also other companies in the consulting or finance department of a corporation, it will lead to only positives. When a client feels this sense of community between themselves and the consultant they are speaking with they will give good referrals to their friends and or business partners. This will lead to more and more clients, which will lead to a greater amount of money for that company, as well as the consultant.

I believe that because of my immersion experience, I can develop community with people that I’m not familiar with. In my experience I developed a sense of community within the theatre. Before taking theatre I had no prior experience and felt nervous about the situation. But with a lot of hard work and getting to know everybody I felt that I became part of their community in the theatre. I feel good about the relationships that I developed through this experience and feel that I could do the same outside of the office with clients of the company I would work for.
The last reason why I feel that the experience was beneficial toward my future aspirations in the business world is for the simple fact that I can now recognize and appreciate communities better. Before this class I didn’t have a grasp on what an actually community included. A community is made of many different things, such as relationships, interests, and goals. After taking this class I realized how one-dimensional I looked at the word community. I thought a community was just a place that you were from or located on a map. I didn’t take into account the many aspects that go into being an actual, functioning community. I feel that this appreciation will benefit me in my career because I could sit back and see how the community of my workplace develops. I’ll be able to recognize the different parts of the community and will be able to improve them, now that I know that they are there.
I feel that being able to recognize a community is an instrumental part of improvement. If you can’t distinguish the difference between a working and non-working community, you will not be able to see problems that may arise. In turn, if you can’t recognize problems and fix them, the community is only ill-fated. With my ability to recognize the community development at my future workplace I will be able to detect any problems that could spell disaster and improve the company.

When I think of community, I think of a loving family. A successful business is like loving family also. Every member of that family, or business, plays a different role to benefit each other. I feel with the sense of community I have developed, as well as the knowledge gained from my experience in our Community Leadership class will make me an important contribution to any company that chooses to hire me. I also hope to bring a few laughs as well, as I tried to do in class.
