Community service writing assignment For my community service I helped out with a forth / fifth grade combination class at Julien Elementary School. I had to do twenty hours of community service this semester. I wanted to help out at an Elementary school because I plan on being an elementary school teacher when I am older. I thought not only is this a chance to help out my community it is also a chance to get a hands on experience with the students. I really hope that I helped out in the class a lot. From the response I got from the students along with the teacher I think I did.
I hope I made as much of an impression on the students as they did on me. They kids were great and really gave me a good example of what it is to be a teacher. I mostly helped them with math which was hard for me because of the fact that it has been a while since I was in forth grade and had to do the math they are doing. I mostly helped the students who were having trouble in a subject and need extra attention. I helped out the teacher a lot because it just so happened that the time I was there he had a heart attack and was gone for quite a while. The students had a different sub for at least 3 weeks while I was there.
Since I had got to know the students quite well during my time there, I helped out the subs. Even though I was only there for about 2 hours a day I think I made an impression on the students. The student that I helped the most was a forth grade boy named Brenden. He was a student who need extra attention and had trouble with a lot of things.
The Development Of A Prevention Dropout For Secondary Student In An Urban High School Setting
The Development of a Prevention Dropout for Secondary Student in an Urban High School Setting According to Noguera and Dimon (2003), the rate of dropout in American urban high schools may be the biggest but least known problem today. Noguera and Dimon estimated that at a great amount of schools 50% and even more of the students who start their ninth grade leave it without graduation. [3]. Many ...
He had ADD and so he had a lot of trouble paying attention. I became good friends with Brenden. He is a great kid and I learned a lot from him. The teacher has to take care of a whole class and he doesn’t have much time to focus on one student if they are having trouble. Brenden had a lot of trouble not only with school, but a lot with other students.
He had a little bit of a temper problem and the other students would make fun of him because of his ADD. I helped him a lot with his problems and it got to the point where if he had a problem he would only talk to me about it. I became really close with him as if he were a little brother. Because this is what I planning to do in the future I think this assignment meant a lot more to me then other students in my class. It may not have help out the community as much as I wanted it to, but I hope I made a difference in at least one of those students to make them a better person; that’s what it is all about isn’t it. I learned a lot about myself through this experience.
I learned that it takes a lot more time then I have thought before to teach students something. They all have potential to learn, but they don’t have the focus. Being so young they just want to have fun and enjoy life. It is hard to keep them focus and willing to learn.
It gave me a lot of tips of what to expect and do in the future. I don’t think there was a negative thing about me helping at Julien and I would defiantly do it again. Most of all I hope I helped the students as much as they helped me.
