Compare Achilles and Odysseus Both Achilles and Odysseus are great Greek heroes. Achilles is the son of the mortal Peleus (the king of the Myrmidons), and the immortal sea nymph Thetis. Odysseus’s father is Laertes and his mother is Anticleia. These famous heroes have both, similarities and differences. Both of them are known to us as the most famous heroes who were taking part in the historical war, where the Greeks battled against the Trojans. Achilles and Odysseus are the heroes of two famous narrative poems written by Homer, namely, the Iliad and the Odyssey. There narrative poems tell the story about their adventures and heroic deeds.
Both of the heroes are Greek, and both of them are brave warriors. However, despite these similarities, Achilles and Odysseus differ from one another significantly. In contrast to Achilles, Odysseus was famous for his ability to trick and deceive, while Achilles was famous for his great bravery and strength. For example, in order to take Troy, Odysseus offered the Greek to make a large horse made of wood. Odysseus is known as the man of many tricks”, or the man of many ways. Odysseus was forbidden to return home because of the anger of the gods and lived on an island with Calypso, a goddess, who loved him greatly.
Similar to Achilles, Odysseus had to choose, either to remain living on an island and to become immortal, or to return back home to his wife and become mortal, like all other people. Odysseus chooses to return. Achilles, being godlike and almost immortal (as he was invulnerable on all of his body except for his heel), remains petulant and a little bit childish; while Odysseus matures through all the dangers and adventures he comes across with on the long way home. Achilles and Odysseus embody the best and the worst in the human nature, however, Achilles is less clever and smarter than Odysseus..
