Compare and contrast the U.S. reactions to World War I in 1914 with its reactiob
to World war II on 1939
World War I started in the year 1914. The underlying causes of the war
was the nationalism that was found throughout Europe in the 19th and 20th
century. There was political and economic rivalry among the nations. But the
main “shot” that started the war was on June 28, 1914. This was when Archduke
Francis Ferdinand was shot and killed by a member of a secret society, the Black
Hand. One month almost all of Europe found them selves declaring war upon
each other.
The president of the United States at this time was Wilson. He tried to
keep a basis agreement between the Central Powers and the Allies. This
changed when Germany of the Central Powers announced that they would have
submarine warfare against the ships of great Britain. The U.S. was strongly
against unrestricted submarine warfare. The American people at this time felt we
should not get involved in the war, but there views began to change. On May 17
a British liner was sunk by German submarines. Over 125 Americans lost there
lives. Another large event was that forced U.S. into t he war was the “Zimmerman
Note”. This was a note sent by the U.S. ambassador of German to Mexico. The
note was sent in hope to for a alliance with Mexico, if the U.S. was to join the war.

The note was found and printed in news papers in the U.S, where any one could
read it. The U.S. entered the was on April 6 1917.
After the U.S. enter the war in April, it transported military force overseas
very rapidly. This known as the American expeditionary Force. The U.S. was
under the command of General John Perching. More then 175,00 American
troops were in France by June 1917. By November of 1981 the American forces

The U.S. was strictly neutral in World War II , but they where forced to
pay attention to the Axis powers (Germany, Japan and Italy) and there actions.
At the time of the war the government did a few things. One, they passed a
series of Neutrality acts and also they passed an act that gave the President
ability to lend or lease weapons . congress was building up U.S. Defensive
strength. The country wanted to stay neutral, but it was not easy with all the
action going on in Europe. Countries such as Poland, Holland, France,
Czechoslovakia and others where begin destroyed by the Axis power. In 1938
the U.S. brought all the nations of America together . So that they could all act
as one, in the defense of the western Hemisphere.
Early moring of December 7, 1941, Japanese submarines and
carrier-based planes attacked the U.S. pacific fleets at Pearl harbor. This event
marked the entrance of the Japanese into the war and the entrance of the
United States into the war on the Allied side. Germany and Italy joined with
Japan to declare war on the United states. War was declared by them on the
Unites States December 11.
In both of these wars the U.S. entered on the side of Great Britain. When
at the same time we entered on the opposite sides of Germany. We have
similar language and laws as Great Britain. We have many differences with
Germany. We did not find the actions of Germany to be far, due to the fact that
normal citizens were killed, besides the fact that in some cases they where
