The diction and connotation that one uses within their writing is important because the words one chooses to use convey the main idea of the writing. The difference between choosing whether to use the word “lady” and the word “woman” is very different because they both have different connotations. While the word “lady” is usually used to describe a female who has high standards for proper behavior, the word “woman” is usually used to describe an adult female. “Lady” has definitely more clarity within it when compared to “woman” because it describes a person or character much deeper than if they were just an ordinary woman. The word “lady” would usually be used by someone that has respect for the person they are describing or talking about. This word would have a positive connotation because it’s complementing the person who is being spoken of.
This word could be used anytime the person who is talking feels like saying something positive and more specific about a person. When someone is trying to be polite to a woman or is trying to attract her, they would most likely use the word “lady” to refer to them because it’s a compliment. Since this is a compliment, it’s said that it has positive connotation. Other examples might be included in a book where the author is trying to describe a character of the female gender and conveys the image of her as a good person.

The word “woman” would usually be used by someone that isn’t trying to give a lot of detail about someone they are talking about and don’t show much respect for that person. There wouldn’t really be a negative or positive connotation to this word because it has a neutral connotation. This would most likely be used n an ordinary situation where one is trying to state the facts or in a news article. Another example of the usage of this word is when a male doesn’t really have any feelings for the female he is talking to and calls her “woman” in order to degrade her. Although, this is not always the case, most of the time “woman” has a negative connotation.
Thus, I believe that it would be neutral because it would depend on how the word is being used. The reason why one would choose to use “lady” is in order to give more specific detail of a female while one would use “woman” in order to say that the person is an adult female. As one can tell, there are many differences between the usages of these two words although they essentially describe the same type of character. This is why it’s important to choose one’s words carefully in order to convey the most precise and most correct idea to the reader..
