In a world full of ethnic, racial, and sexual discrimination’s, it seems only befitting that we go as far as to draw dividing lines within gender. It has long been disputed that there exist many clearly defined points that set a “guy” apart from a “man”. This subject is often tossed around jokingly, with lines such as “Guys start projects. Men finish them.” This statement places the man in a higher place of professionalism, giving guys no credit for being reliable. A classic contrast between guys and men is that guys are more in touch with their basic instincts (eat, sleep, have fun), where men seem to be more in touch with a sophisticated world (drink fine aged wine, read Crichton, and play golf).
Men spend so much time trying to be a better man, guys just do not waste time on such trivial things. Ironically though, it is the man who will always say that he is “just one of the guys”. Although the subject may be viewed from many perspectives, I believe that men are simply guys who have been conditioned to a point that they no longer know who or what they are.
Men have been conditioned by what they define as “success”. Success drives a man to be a professional in his field, to wear dress shirts and slacks, to put every ounce of energy within into becoming something greater. No matter how powerful or prestigious a man becomes, he will always strive for more. Manhood is defined by an inability to be content, which masks itself as success. Guys, on the other hand, share a different meaning of the word success. To a guy, success does not come in the form of status or stock figures, success comes in the number of suicide chicken wings he can ingest in a period of time, how far he can lob a football, and most importantly, the strength of his friendships. Guys are happy with enjoying life’s simple pleasures, and are content with the notion of doing absolutely nothing. A defining contrast between men and guys, therefore, is that men will never be as content in life as guys will be, because guys simply don’t care.
The Essay on Rauschenbusch A Man Ahead Of His Time
Rauschenbusch: A Man Ahead of His Time "Theology is the esoteric thought of the Church." (WR 15) What is meant by this is that theology is a part of the Church that is very mysterious and confusing to most laymen. Rauschenbusch has introduced many new ideas into the theological point of view. Rauschenbusch tries to explain that the social gospel is here to help people pull more from theology than ...
Men, along with being conditioned by their successes, are easily conditioned by women. A man will go out of his way to open doors for women, to treat them with the utmost respect and chivalry. Men spend quantities of money on women simply to show how rich they are. A guy, on the other hand, is content with letting women affirm their femininity. Guys do not fall under the mind control that women have over men, a guy knows that if a women is truly interested in him, he doesn’t have to go out of his way to win her over. Guys are confident enough in their own abilities that they do not have to impress anyone with money or overzealous acts. Men, who are always driving for their own success, will constantly try to get the best women for the status and confidence that they bring, not necessarily for emotional bondage. A guy, however, would much more prefer a woman who is on his own level, who doesn’t mind a little dirt, and who doesn’t expect too much. Guys are looking for a different kind of companionship, one more along the lines of the friendships he possesses with the other guys. A good analogy to the differences between men and guys when it comes to female sexuality is that men think a woman’s perfume is a turn on, where guys think that their own sweat is.
Although men are products of demanding social and sexual pressures, not all males succumb to the forces of persuasion that are so intent on shaping who they are. Guys have that special ability to block out unimportant messages and take life for what it truly is, to have fun, and to be a success in their own eyes. There exists a certain duality between guys and men. A truly successful male knows how to harness the power and prestige of the man world, yet he also knows when to be a guy, knows how to enjoy life, and is content with what he has become. The conditioned transformation from being a guy to being a man, thus, is beneficial to the guy who knows how accept this conditioning properly. A guy who accepts conditioning as a way to grasp the reigns of his life, but does not allow it to alter his desire to have fun, to be competitive, and sometimes to be stupid, has won the battle. Manhood is indeed a product of social and sexual conditioning, and when implemented properly, can be one of the most beneficial stages in a guys life.
