CENTRIFUGAL COMPRESSOR
RECOMMENDED TIME
Startup of this system may take about two to three hours in actual practice, but the simulator compresses this time and it should take about 20-30 minutes to complete the exercise described here.
SITUATION
Prior to initiating this simulated startup it is assumed that all of the pre-commissioning steps have been taken. These steps are:
Pressure testing of lines and equipment
Flushing and cleaning of lines and equipment
Removal of blinds
Run in of C-201
Instruments checked for reliability and zeroed
Utilities available
In order to properly simulate a cold startup it is necessary that the Console Switches be in the following positions:
Console Console
Switch No. Position Name
40 CLOSE Feed Block Valve HV-300
41 CLOSE Steam Block Valve HV-330
42 NORMAL Feed Block Valve HV-300 Fails
43 NORMAL Steam Block Valve HV-330 Fails Closed
44 NORMAL Kick Back Valve V-360 Fails Open
45 NORMAL Kick Back Valve V-360 Fails Closed
46 NORMAL Forward Gas Flow V-380 Fails Open
47 NORMAL Forward Gas Flow V-380 Fails Closed
All Automatic instrument controllers should be in the manual mode with control valves closed.
Prior to admitting process fluid to the unit it is necessary that all of the utility systems be started up, checked out, and operating.

START-UP
1) Open feed block valve HV-300 and steam block HV-330 with switches HS-300 and HS-330 respectively.
2) Manually open FIC-360 (By-Pass Flow) about 35%.
3) Open PIC-320 (Suction Drum Pressure) manually to obtain a pressure of 3.52 KGCM2.
4) Switch PIC-320 to automatic.
5) Open PIC-360 (Compressor Discharge)) manually to 7.03 KGCM2, and switch to automatic.
6) If speed goes over 5000 rpm, reduce PIC-360 to hold it below 5000 rpm.
7) Open FIC-380 (Product Gas Flow) manually to 4.25 KNM3H, and switch to automatic.
8) Open PIC-390 (Product Gas Pressure) manually to 5.6 KGCM2, and switch to automatic.
9) Switch FIC-360 to automatic at its current value. Then increase setpoint to design condition of 5.1 KNM3H.
10) CONGRATULATIONS – the unit is now operating at normal conditions and on stream.
SHUTDOWN
TRAINING OBJECTIVE
To train operators in the necessary steps to be taken for an orderly and safe shutdown of this equipment.
RECOMMENDED TIME
An orderly shutdown of the Centrifugal Compressor can be done in about 1-2 hours in the plant. However the simulator compresses this time, and it should be accomplished in about 15 minutes on the simulator by a skilled operator.
An orderly shutdown implies a shutdown that has been scheduled, and the proper parties have been notified and are aware that this will occur.
SITUATION
The unit is lined out at normal operating conditions.
A planned shutdown is scheduled and the operator is notified to start the operation.
OBSERVATION
The operator is expected to carry out the planned shutdown in the manner outlined in this exercise.
ACTION REQUIRED
The unit is lined out at normal operating conditions and the operator is instructed to shut the unit down in an orderly and safe manner.
It will be necessary to perform the tasks associated with this shutdown in the prescribed sequence as described in the following Procedure section. It will also be necessary to prepare the system for a safe entry of personnel or for maintenance of the unit. This portion of the exercise is not covered in this simulation.
PROCEDURE FOR THIS EXERCISE
1) Have the unit lined out at normal operating conditions.

The whole project itself must contain areas of all of the course modules and how it has helped me construct this piece of work. By the end of the year I should have a detailed portfolio that shows that I can present that I have learned the required and necessary aspects of the core units throughout the year and be in a strong position to accept any work within the music industry. 2) Instruct the trainee to prepare for a scheduled shutdown. The student will have to perform the tasks that follow:
a) Switch FIC-380 to manual and shut off flow.
b) Switch PIC-320 to manual and close valve.
c) Switch PIC-390 to manual and decrease pressure to vent drum.
d) Switch PIC-360 to manual and gradually decrease pressure to slow unit down.
e) Open FIC-380 slightly to bleed off gas.
f) Continue to close V-380 until unit stops.
g) At this point, close block valves HV-300 and HV-330.
h) Place all controllers in manual with their control valves closed.
i) The unit is now off line and ready for flushing and cleaning before maintenance can begin.
