Why is confidence such an important trait? By the famous words of Marcus Lullius Cicero, “Confidence is that feeling in the mind that embarks on true and honorable courses with a trust and hope in oneself.” In other words, confidence is essential because it makes great accomplishments happen with relative ease. It is the spark of initiation for any goal, no matter how trivial or how great. From this quote, may people can see that confidence is a very important asset while traveling through the road of life, because without confidence, failure will prevail because people never even try.
Think about the skills Michael Jackson had to have in order to achieve his status in the hierarchy of basketball. Sure, he had to have tremendous skill and knowledge about what he was doing, but gaining the skill required to play so well was anything but easy. In fact, it would be incredibly hard: Jackson would have to spend hours of his life on end practicing basketball outside battling exhaustion, heat, and even the weather. Surely Jackson did not practice just to be pained and tortured in the process. He had to aim for something. He aimed for the NBA, and he had to have some flame, some spark to drive him there. This spark was the spark of confidence, the skill that makes things happen.
However, do not get mislead that confidence only paves the road to truly successful people. Confidence helps all people, even ordinary people! It was a dreadful, desolate Sunday with an overcast sky when I felt confidence touch me on the shoulder during a seemingly hopeless situation. It was during this day that I was attempting to sell mugs for my local school fundraiser program, and half of my day wasted away without much success. With the day setting and the clock closing in on six, I gave a heavy sigh and went back to my house to have dinner, without selling any mugs. The clock struck six-thirty when it started to rain. Down the rain came, in thick sheets of liquid. The house shuddered at ever snap of the wind like a whip, but somehow I had developed an outer layer of confidence within me. It held stiff and still while the house around me succumbed to the rain and wind. I picked up my umbrella, pocketed my mug, and walked out through the door into the rain trying to sell another mug. It felt good to be confident. I sniffed the wind and I knew I was going to sell that mug, and I knew that it would be fun to sell that mug. I knew the right moves. I was prepared for what was to come. With a charming smile and a few words, I sold that mug with a sense of accomplishment, and a sense of joy.

Obviously, selling the mug was a very trivial goal. However, selling many mugs would raise a very large amount of money for my school, all from the result of a little spark of confidence. The result of a little confidence becomes a bit clearer now. Confidence will inspire many people to do seemingly daunting, impossible tasks. Usually, when people get the willpower to try and attempt to do something, they will succeed. Sounds familiar? It is, but there is more yet. In many situations, people will take joy into what they are doing, and even if the task is not emotionally rewarding, the accomplishment most certainly is. People gain knowledge, experience, happiness, and even more confidence, which gives more base to build upon. These are the most obvious reasons to value confidence. But there is still one point overlooked: people with confidence live longer than people without confidence. Scientific studies suggest that confidence results in a higher immunity to disease and infection because people with confidence usually have a higher morale than those that do not.
From these points of observation I see that confidence is used to make extraordinary things happen, tangible and intangible, small or big. It is extremely versatile, getting many people out of the stickiest situation, and pushing many people to their limits. And that is what really matters: taking all my power and squeezing out all the potential I have within me. That is why the next time I go outside to take a breath of fresh air in the night, I will look up at the starts and aim at them, no matter how high they are.
