AIDS (Acquired immune deficiency syndrome) is a complex group of diseases occurring in a person after his/her immune system is damaged by HIV (human immune deficiency virus).
Infection with HIV not necessarily develops in AIDS as the virus can remain inactive in body for several years without causing any problem. There is no definite cure but current treatment includes those drugs that slows down or stops the spread of the virus to other body parts as well as treating those diseases that develop secondary to it.
According to one estimate by CDC (Centers for Disease Control and prevention) in 1998 around 650 K to 900 K were infected with HIV and 300 K had already developed AIDS.
This disease is most common in gay or bisexual men. Gay or bisexual comprise half of the total AIDS patients. While 25% were intravenous drug users and 18% women (mostly infected with STD).

HIV can spread via different routes. The main route of transmission is sexual contact during which bodily fluids are exchanged between the partners. During any sexual intercourse exchange of fluids must be avoided by using some preventive method. The initial spread of HIV started among homosexuals when people of same sex unite their private parts.
It can also spread through blood transfusions (when blood of infected person is transfused in another person), use of infected needles that pierce the tiny vessels. Transfusions must be done with great care and special care must be taken to screen the blood before transfusing. Health professionals giving care to AIDS patient must take excessive care to avoid poke of infected needles in their arms as this will make them HIV positive as well. One other major route of transmission is pregnancy of an infected woman. Woman can easily transfer them to their new born babies.

The most densely and adversely affected population is of Sub-Saharan Africa. They are more than 64% of the total infected people of the world and 11.15% of total world’s population. The spread of infection in this area is also at much faster rate than any other world regions. African countries are most densely infected with more than 50% of worldwide infected adults. The causes of it epidemic in this region is attributed to the excessive poverty, deteriorating health system, poorly maintained equipments, malnutrition, uneducated environment, use of infected needles and equipments, lack of knowledge of preventive measures and treatments, unawareness among general public, and excessive unsafe methods of sexual exposure.
Number of AIDS patients and born with AIDS are increasing. In Africa, there are around 12.3 million orphaned kids infected with AIDS. In African countries AIDS patients are treated with antiretroviral drugs however of these 4 million are still untreated due to lack of resources, expensive drugs and lack of education and supporting programs. U.S. and other countries around the world started supporting and funding to develop certain AIDS programs in Africa and all over the world.

HIV is the retrovirus; its main substrate is CD4+ cells (T-helper lymphocytes) of immune system (NYT Guide to Knowledge), macrophages and dendritic cells. The virus attacks T-helper lymphocytes and reproduces itself in the cells using cell machinery to replicate. After making new virus it sends out viruses to other parts of the body and eventually affects subsequent T-helper lymphocytes. Once immune system becomes weak and lymphocytes are destroyed the infected person becomes vulnerable to other external and internal opportunistic pathogens.
