Contemporary marriage
While sacred, legal and heterosexual describes the traditional marriage, secular, same sex, live-in relationship and divorce show how the contemporary marriage has been transformed from the form of traditional marriage. Marriage is a social union or legal contract between people that creates kinship. By the marriage two people form a family and this has been the general procedure that most of people follows. Even thought the marriage and forming a family has started with existing of human being, the perspective, value, and trend has been transformed as the society has experience enormous changes.
The definition of traditional marriage is a state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife. In this definition, we can recognize that the traditional marriage assumes the relationship between two people is heterosexual relationship. However in the contemporary situation, the definition of marriage should be ‘relation of one or more men to one or more women that is recognized by custom of law.’ In other words, in this contemporary society, not only heterosexual relationship but also the same sex relationship and even their marriage are accepted. Certainly the same sex relationship has been existed even in the traditional society however their relationship could be never accepted officially. Nowadays in the meaning of respecting their human dignity and happiness, same-sex marriage is also granted as official marriage relationship. In 2001 the Netherlands became the first nation in the world to grant same sex marriage and followed by Belgium (2003), Spain, Canada (2005), South Africa and few countries. However, whether granting the same sex marriage officially or not is still hot potato in many countries.

The religious perspective plays vital role in the marriage especially in traditional marriage. fist, it should be understood that the dependency on religion in traditional society is much heavier than contemporary society. Therefore the traditional marriage emphasizes the sacred sanction. Most of traditional marriage followed the religious ceremonial order and take vow in front to god and declares that their marriage contract is agreed in front of god. Therefore the traditional marriage regarded as something holy and especially in the Eastern countries they believed it is god (or heaven) who matches bride and groom as husband and wife. This is one of the reasons why same-sex marriage was not accepted in the traditional society.
However in modern society, dependency on religion became much lighter compare to the traditional especially the importance of religion in one’s life dramatically decreased therefore still many couples follows the religious ceremonial order and take vow, but most of them do not believe in them and think that their marriage is based on their love, not the match making of god. Therefore in the past divorce was regarded as shameful, however in the modern society, if the couple has problem to sustain their marriage, they think it better to divorce rather than maintain the unhappy marriage. Thus expect two countries in the world-the Philippines and the Vatican City- all the counties in the world legalized divorce. The main causes of divorce are adultery, domestic violence, midlife crisis etc.

Nevertheless the married couple chooses to divorce to terminate their marriage, still it hurts both side and especially in the Eastern society, divorce is dishonored experience to the individuals. Besides the young people thinks it is better to have a live-in relationship rather than having a divorced life. Live-in relation officially means that the couples, who are willing to get married someday, spend some time together like a married couple including sexual intercourse before they actually get married. However in the actual situation, most of the live-in relationship based on that the couples do not have any will to marry but want to only enjoy the sexual relationship. Above all, they want to prohibit the responsibilities that arise when they get married. In other words, the live-in relationship is kind of union of couples without any responsibilities toward each other but only to enjoy their lives.
Every individual has right to choose and enjoy their life therefore it is hard to say that contemporary marriages trend, same sex, live-in relationship and divorce are wrong. However there are certain ethical perspectives to think about. The most important and common problem arise from those kind of trend will be the right of children. In the same sex marriage, even if the couples have children somehow, what about the right of the children who should need the love and help of mother and father both side? Even if the same sex couple gives love to the children enough, we cannot deny the kind of love and role expected from male and female parents are different. This is similarly applicable to the children who experience the divorce of the parents. Besides what about the painful experience those children have to bear in the process of the divorce of the parents? In case of live-in marriage, we have to think about that is it a proper relationship that does not have any responsibility but only sexual desires remains.
