A contract of employment is an agreement between an employer and employee and is the basis of the employment relationship, it a written contract which both the employee and employer have to abide by, however not all contracts of employment have to be written, they can also be oral but this is not often. A contract ‘starts’ as soon as an offer of employment is accepted. Starting work proves that you accept the terms and conditions offered by the employer. The main elements of a contract are pay, holiday, working hours, duties/responsibilities, sickness absence etc.
Pay (salary)
In this part of the contract the employer will state the salary that will be paid to the employee. The salary will be abided by the minimum wages and in the case of a teacher; the salary will be in accordance to the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document. Payments are paid monthly on an equal basis unless stated otherwise. As stated in the contract employees will be paid depending on the hours of work they have done also the contract will include the date that the payment will be received by the employee, furthermore, It is important that the employees are paid correctly and fairly and promptly; this will help employers obtain the cooperation of their employee as it can act as a means of motivating staffs resulting in them complying with their employer.
Holiday (Annual leave)
This section provides the details of how long and when employees are allowed to go on holidays. It states exactly how many days or weeks of annual leave and employee is entitled to. In the contract that I have provided it states that teachers are entitled to 5.6 weeks per annum inclusive of public holidays. This is a big amount when compared to other professions therefore it is important that it is mentioned in the contract so that employees may take it in consideration when deciding for the job role, this also helps employers obtain the cooperation of their employee, as staff will be able to plan their holidays in advance not miss days of work which may affect the organisation’s performance.

Here the employer will state the hours of work that is required by the employee and it will also state which days employees are obliged to work. This is also important that is a part of the contract as it gives both the employer and employee the exact number of hours that is required by the organisation. This helps the employee prepare for the job beforehand and also it helps obtain the cooperation of their employee as employee will be obliged to work during those given days and time.
Sickness Absence
It is important that this section is included in all contracts of employment, because sometimes people fall ill and due to that illness they are unable to attend work. By employers stating the procedure and regulations of sickness absence it gives the employee a peace of mind when this occurs as they know what do and how the situation will be dealt and as a result employers are able to obtain the cooperation of their employee.
Duties/responsibilities
This section of the contract employment provides details to the employee of all the duties and responsibilities that an employee has for them when working for the organisation. This is a vital part of the contract as it mentioned what is required of the employee by the organisation and this insures that employees correspond with their duties as it mentioned in their contract and failing to adhere to the duties can lead to complications.
