Copper was one of the earliest elements known to man. It was said to be discovered in Iraq about 9,000 B.C. It is to far back to recalect who actually founded the element. The word copper orriginated from the latin language (cuprus).
Copper was later mixed with another alloy called bronze in about 5,000 B.C. This had made a Deposits of copper occur in the southwestern part of the U.S. Other countries that mine this ore are: Chile, Soviet Union, Canada, Zambia, and Ziare.
Methods like power shovels and underground operations are used to get the ore. The chemistry of copper is important knowledge to know. Such as chemical properties which are ideal for many purposes. It is fairly soft, ductile and has a particular color. Heat and electricity pass through copper very easy. Its melting point is 1,083oC and its boiling point is 2,595oC.
It has a density of about 8.9% grams per cubic centimeter. Also important are its chemical properties. Copper is an active metal that disolves in most acids and akalis. In moist air it it mixes with H20 and C02 producing a greenish color. Most uses with copper involve electricity and wiring. It is used in cables, busbars, tansformer windings and electrical componets. Deoxidized copper is easy to cast and used in chemical plants, copper tubes, ship condensers, automoble radiators, domestic water pipes, roofing and GEA’s.
Some of copper compounds like brass and bronze are widely used. Copper compound are used in pesticides, battery fluid, fire retardents, food additives, farm animals, fire works, ceramics and enamals, pigments, paint, metal preservitives, marine paint, water purifires and wood preservitives. Copper is also a part of our currency. Pennys and other coins are made with copper or at least Copper is important to human health as well as plants health. It is a micro-nutrient for human and plant life. Copper is critical to enzyme production. It helps devolope blood vessels, tendons, bones and nerves. Copper can be vital to someone with Wilson’s Disease.
The Essay on Accidents, Incidents and Fatalities in a Chemical/Refinery Plant
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have found recurring causes of accidents in the chemical industry and petroleum refineries, which include lack of process hazards analysis (PHA), poor analysis of process condition, use of improper or badly-designed chemical equipment, and training and operator error (Belke, 2007). ...
It affects the brain, liver and kidneys. In conclusion, copper is an important part of life both for our body and our surroundings. Without copper the world would be a different place to live. Copper is essential to the production of under ground pipes and anything with wireing. Now that I know more about copper I can tell people its importance to our lives.
