ESSAY : “COSTA RICA….. A PARADISE IN CENTRAL AMERICA”.
I.
Costa Rica is a country located in the narrow Central America. It is well known all over the world for its natural resources, hospitality, democracy and lover of peace.
History has shown that, that due to its inhabitants way of being, the Province of Guanacaste which were part of the Nicaraguan territory, decided to join to Costa Rica and become “Ticos”. From this party adventure, Costa Rica acquired a new huge territory, population, hand labor, folklore, new customs and traditions.
Many other immigrants were coming from Africa, and China, but recently, from Taiwan, and Colombia.

1. Before the earthquake, Nicaragua had many problems not only economical but also politically, because the country was under the dictatorship of Anastasio Somoza who had the control of the country for more than 40 years.
The discontent of the population tired of this political system led to a revolution. As a result, Anastasio Somoza was derogated and killed, giving place to a new political system based on the ideology of Carlos Augusto Sandino, The so called “Sandinismo” took control of Nicaragua, but it came to be worse than the former government, and many people left their country and crossed border fleeing from war and abuse in the Government.

Nicaragua experienced many problems, among them the differences in the way of thinking of the commandants who controlled the government, where came to be a kind of communism system commanded first by “Commandant Cero” and then by Daniel Ortega. 3. A large quantity of Nicaraguan Citizens lost their properties, their belongings and escaped to Costa Rica, seeking a new life, looking for jobs to support their families, working in the banana and coffee plantation on the harvest seasons.
Many of them found jobs in construction, as security guards in San José, the capital city, some others worked as guards in parking areas, and most part of the women worked as maids and a minor quantity as ambulant sellers.
4. As in the past, Nicaragua still suffers of many problems like unemployment, lack of money and many others. In the present time, there’s just no work in Nicaragua, and here in Costa Rica you can at least make something,” said Patricia Herrera a 27 year old illegal immigrant, who sells “vigorones” in the Paseo Los Turistas in Puntarenas. She earns around ten thousand colones per day. In Nicaragua, you can’t earn that in a whole day,” she finally said.
B. The Immigration of people from all over Central and South America have made life for “Ticos” very hard, due to the availability of cheap hand labor from Nicaraguans.
1. The Social Security has made special programs for the new population; many children from Nicaraguan have been insured by the Social Security of Costa Rica. Many immigrants with effort and a lot of work have acquired properties in many places of San José like “La Carpio”, and recently in Puntarenas.
2. For decades, the immigrants have been mostly tolerated, but the economic slump suffered in the last past months has many Costa Ricans worried that immigrants are taking their jobs, leaving them with very little choices to make their living. This has an enormous repercussion because these facts have represented an “invasion” that threatens the economic and social future of the country, bringing up instability.

C. San Juan Lake which belongs entirely to Nicaragua has been a subject of conflict between Costa Rica and this country.
1. Costa Rica has faced conflicts for sailing through San Juan’s Lake. This has given place to major making the Costa Rican Government to look for a solution to end up these problems.
2. A new road is being constructed to avoid the use of the Nicaraguan San Juan Lake, avoid problems with Nicaragua, and be able to join many communities which are of very difficult access.
3. As a result a development and improvement will reach these faraway places, with the construction of this new road, which will make their lives easier, because it will enable these communities to produce new employments and new ways of communication.
III. Conclusion
Despite government efforts to regulate immigration, there is a lack of good government control policies to avoid the coming of new immigrants, mainly from Nicaragua. The desire for a better life, a better job, a gathering with relatives, or escaping oppressive conditions at home, have made more and more immigrants to walk through bushes, crossing rivers, climbing mountains to be in Costa Rica, no matter all the risks and sacrifices they have taken to come, leaving behind their customs, families and properties to have a better future: Food, work, home, education and a peaceful place to live. In one word a “Paradise” on Earth.
