Creative Writing During the past few years the recruiting trends for professionals in IT industry has changed drastically. The majority of companies require a Bachelors degree as a minimum condition before they will take you in hand. Technology and the computer industry are constantly changing and for me to keep from being left behind, I must be educated on the now. I considered what actions I could take to make myself more attractive to prospective employers, and the only obvious answer to the question was that I had to go back to school; I needed to further my education, complete at least a Bachelors degree, if not a Masters and I suppose Loyola Marymount University will help me in my aspirations and beliefs. I know a lot of the technical stuff associated with my job, but there are a few areas I could definitely use some help on. Two major components are written and oral communication.
I have never been good in these areas and going to Loyola Marymount University will help me since it is a major necessity to grasp and learn to use these skills in order to receive my degree. The decision was made, but what were the goals I hoped to achieve by studying. After much thought and deliberation, I considered some goals that I am personally committed to achieve as a student: expertise in my chosen field of study, the ability to communicate that expertise, and expanding my horizons. Thus, next objective that I would like to achieve is better communication skills. Communication skills are vital in the business world. In the IT field they are even more critical. Too often I find it difficult to communicate with non-tech people, using technical terms and nomenclature rather than lay terms when speaking to the tech impaired.

My goal is to be able to communicate equally well with my fellow IT professionals and non-technical coworkers, managers, and clients. I believe I already possess above average communication skills; my objective in this case is to further improve upon those skills; especially in the area of group speaking. I have never been good at presenting to groups of people. For much the same reasons I have trouble speaking with non-technical individuals, group speaking is difficult for me as well. When speaking to a group, it is important to try and explain the topic so that all can understand it, not just the tech savvy ones. Next, is to learn as much as I can.
A quote from Robert Theobald sums up how I feel about learning, There is no limit to the process of learning to learn. Indeed, once human beings have been bitten by the excitement of finding new ways to structure knowledge, they will never again fear being bored. (http://www.indra.com/transform/tlc/rtpage.html) I could not have said it better myself. I have definitely been bitten by the bug. Professionally, learning keeps you up on changes and advances in the business world. For example, learning new management techniques, training tips for employees and new motivational skill to keep your colleagues moral up. Keeping up with the changes will make me a better manager. Personally, I feel it is important to learn new things everyday, whether it is something as easy as a new word, to a bit of history I did not know.
It can also be as difficult as learning Calculus. If you do not continue to learn you will not be successful in business or in your personal life. The next goal I have set out to achieve is to expand my horizons. I have developed my own certain way to do things. Much the same as anyone else, I have a routine for completing my work. This makes my job easier and more comfortable, but also make it more difficult to adapt to changes. I would like to open my mind to new ways of doing the same tasks. Every situation in the IT world has multiple ways in which to solve it.

I would like to become more open to those alternatives. By becoming more open, I increase my ability to adapt to the ever-changing business world. Which along with my other goals would make me a valuable asset to any company that hires me. My next goal is for me to try to form a rewarding relationship with each member of my learning team. Each course at the Loyola Marymount University to meet at least once a week to discuss the course material and participate in separate learning team assignments and discuss any questions or concerns that may arise within the group. Each member of my learning team is pursuing the same Bachelors degree.
This allows each member to have a common bond with one another. Each member is required to complete the same courses, making it possible for the same members to be enrolled in some of the same courses. When it comes time for the learning teams to be developed in the new courses, some of us in our present learning team will have an advantage because we will already be acquainted from previous courses. The areas that I have listed for improvement are pertinent areas to career success. I wouldnt say that I dont possess the qualities at all, I just need to improve them. I have patience, but sometimes I get in a hurry and because I have so many deadlines to meet I get to the point where I pushing and have no control over the situation. When this happens it tends to get me frustrated and I take it all out on myself. I simply just need to calm down.
Learning through teamwork has been a personal goal. I never have had an opportunity to participate in teams and have wondered what it would be like. The Loyola Marymount University encourages this type of learning. I will become adept at this type of learning before I finish my Bachelors degree. It is very important to me that I present myself as a competent, intelligent employee and maybe manager in future. I respect those who can communicate what they want and what they need.
There is another significant and important, experience I am obtaining while being a Loyola Marymount University student. I meet new people, and get involved with more social events. I am not a very outgoing or extroverted person. It is especially hard for me to meet people with common interests and goals. Since the Loyola Marymount University consists of talented students, it is very easy to find like-minded individuals. The structure of the University, with its learning teams, also helps me get over that apprehension of socializing.
The Essay on Learning Teams: Shrinking To Fit
