Crime Movies Review It is no secret that detective and criminal movies are mostly popular among the audience. For a very long time the critics have been discussing the reasons of such popularity. Some people say that contemporary explicit criminal movies corrupt the audience and serve as the driving force for criminal action. But is it really true? Drew Todd wrote that crime movies implicitly make two arguments at once: they criticize some aspect of society and the offer some resolution by showing a triumph over corruption and brutality. The purpose of this work is to analyze five of the recent crime movies: The Salton Sea (2002), Training Day (2001), Blood Work (2002), Monsters Ball (2001) and Matchstick Men (2003) and determine if criminal movies of different genres really criticize crime and show the irreversible victory of good over evil. In The Salton Sea the main character is first introduced as Danny Parker. Hes playing his trumpet in a room of fire.
He is apparently dying. He begins to tell his tale and offers to decide who or what he really is. Danny Parker is portrayed as Methedrine addicted in the company of the same people. The sense of their life lies in solving the problem of finding money for the next dose. Danny also serves as a rat, or information supplier for the police because of some past crime. Danny possesses all the features of a common drug addicted in the criminal surrounding, but one of the main themes of the movie is the idea that nothing is what it seems.
The Term Paper on Marginal Deterrence Crime Criminal Punishment
The 2002 crime figures for England and Wales comprised of two separate reports, brought together for the first time: (i) Crime statistics recorded by constabularies and (ii) The British Crime Survey (BCS), based on 33, 000 interviews. The BCS is regarded as a more reliable measure of actual levels of crime because it includes experiences of crime that go unreported. The British crime survey of ...
Later we see that Dannys real name is Tom Van Allen and lost his wife as an accidental victim in the methedrine laboratory. He was the witness of the crime, but could not do anything due to his own injury and later the police could not find the criminals because they were in masks. Danny decided to find the murderers of his wife and avenge her death. He is not a real drug addicted but only acts like the one, so that he could make the necessary contacts in the surrounding where could be found the murderers. Later becomes known that two policemen for whom Danny supplied information were those criminals, who killed Dannys wife and gave the information about drug dealers in order to be sure that he had not mistaken their identities. The main driving force for all the characters in this story is drug, Methedrine. For some people like Danny Parker, Jimmy the Finn, Kujo it is the addiction and torture, for other people, such as Tanner, Garcetty and Pooh-Bear it is the means for business and profiteering. The movie shows that neither of sides can survive in such surrounding but none of them is eager to change anything in their life.
Drug addicted would continue to steal or kill for money on the next dose. They dont have time to think about their position, because they are either in suffering for the dose, like Jimmy the Finn was when Danny offered him to participate in the drug deal, or they are under the influence of drugs, like Bobby the drug dealer was, when he was killed by police. There is no other state for such people and usually the third force is required for changing that routine: either they would be killed, or they would be persuaded to change. The second choice is done only consciously by the drug addicted themselves and they would not be able to change forcefully, because they can always find the drug dealer, even in the unfamiliar place. Jimmy the Finn is the person, who consciously decided to get rid of his addiction because he wanted to be similar to his idol Danny. It is interesting to notice that Jimmy had not given up on his idea to be similar to Danny even when he found out that his sample drug addicted was never on drugs but just playing the role.
Instead Jimmy the Finn refused to take money from Dan for the favor he asked and later he saved Dannys life. Again Dannys words are being proved and nothing is what it seems. The message is sent to us says, that in all the layers of the society there can be found human values: friendship, loyalty and faith. The movie is Called The Salton Sea symbolizing the salt lake in the desert, near which Dannys wife was killed. It symbolizes the revenge, because all Dannys actions were dictated by the events at the Salton Sea. But the meaning of this title is deeper.
The Essay on Drug addiction 2
Drug addiction is a dependence on an illegal drug or medication. Many people confuse it with drug dependency, which is when a person needs a drug to function normally. The difference between drug addiction and drug dependence is drug dependence is when a person needs a drug to function normally, like some blood pressure medications can cause a physical dependence, but the person is not addicted to ...
The Salton Se is the lowest point below sea level in the USA and it is situated in the desert. It symbolizes the bottom of the society where Danny and Jimmy the Finn turned up. But life can be found even in the most deserted place, and there is fish in the Salton Sea and birds around it. The same is with life: even in the most terrible place a person can find a friend who will help him in a difficult moment. Training Day is the urban police drama, in which the corrupted detective Alonzo Harris teaches his new partner Jake Hoyt the rules of his work. Jake is eager to start his service as the police detective but Alonzo tames his eagerness from the very morning, when he called Jakes home to make first directions. From the beginning it looks like Alonzo Harris is a serious person for the serious work who would show the newcomer the real life on the streets.
But very soon it is evident, that Alonzo Harris is a wolf among wolves, as he said himself, and the rules do not apply to him not only in the boundaries of his work, but in general. He unleashes his dark side as the corrupted drug dealing cop, who wants Jake to do the same under his supervision. And Jake is left to determine which side is right and which side is wrong and where to fall on. The interaction between Jake and Alonzo shows how a person can be trapped in the circumstances where he has to choose between his welfare, his career, family and the preservation of his own self as decent person who does his job well. Any person of any profession can be put in the position, where he is forced to use his place for machinations. Sometimes two people might have unequal reasons for failing their duties: one is harassed, while another is tempted by the profit, and the former has better reasons to comply. The drama Training Day shows the situation with two police detectives, where Jake, the person who was heavily harassed to become corrupted or die chose to fulfill his duty and to preserve his clear consciousness and moral values.
The Term Paper on Duty Of Care In Own Work Role
“A duty of care involves an obligation that a person in a specific role has to ensure that others are taken care of and not harmed during a particular task. This involves giving appropriate attention, watching out for potential hazards, preventing mistakes or accidents, and making wise choices about steps undertaken in a role. If a duty of care is not met in a role that requires it, then the ...
On the opposite side Alonzo deliberately chose the dark side, where only his goal was important, while his position, his duty and even other people where used merely as means for achieving that goal. The whole situation is worsened by the fact that both Jake and Alonzo were police officers, whose direct duty was to fight the corruption, not to participate in it. The situation questions the police itself, as instead of the protector it turns into the offender. Alonzos back car plays a great role in the movie. It symbolizes his dark soul and corrupted nature. When Alonzo and Jake travel the city with three bullet holes in the glass, those hole symbolize that he was already marked, maybe even by the God himself, and soon he would pay for his actions, and here Drew Todds words are confirmed.
Jakes final decision to fight the circumstances and Alonzo show that there is still hope for people, because evil is overpowered. Alonzos actions turn back against him. As Jake said, the day was really training for him, but he learned not the things Alonzo tried to show him, but respect. Respect for duty, for morale, for fairness and justice.
