The poem “Snow Pantoum” by Robert King is a poem filled with sadness and melancholy. Not only does it allude to depression, but also it leads to a specific type of depression called seasonal affective disorder. SAD is a depression that occurs from the changing of the seasons from summer into fall into winter, winter being the depressing season. People with SAD experience the depression from everything being bare and colorless. The snow is falling this morning and everything is still buried, these lines point to the possibility of SAD. The person may know this is coming and knows what is happening (which is not unexpected).
When the person uses the line And I am loosing myself, a person can speculate that the person in the poem is loosing their sanity beneath the snow. The snow gets deeper and deeper and the thought of the snow never melting and spring with its growth and rebirth will never come. The thought of that makes the person think Almost all I am, now gone. The person may realize that this could be a cycle. They may know that when spring does come, it will get better and next year it will happen again. The reader could come to these conclusions through the lines, in the final settling of the year, like this is almost over. Then in the line, in this continual drift because the person may have been through this before and expected it.
The last verse could possibly be the most important verse in the poem. The snow is falling this morning could represent another day of depression or another bit of sanity lost. And it’s A kind of timely loss, it doesn’t matter because maybe time isn’t important when there is nothing to care for or be glad for. This is a strong poetic bit of thoughts. It is these bits of thoughts that can express a whole person and who they are and who they perceive themselves to be.
