Culture is the language, beliefs, values, behaviors, and material objects that are passed on from one generation to the next. Examining and appreciating cultural differences is an important part of being a sociologist. Recognizing the uniqueness of every culture is key. People of different cultures and backgrounds have always interested me. It is fascinating learning different ways people do things, the various traditions they have, and their way of life.
This paper will demonstrate how people from New York and Maryland are similar, and how they are different in terms of material culture. Many differences are apparent between people fro m Maryland and New Yorkers. New Yorkers are more into jewelry. Men wearing big “iced out” necklaces is often seen among guys from New York. Primarily people from the Baltimore area have gold teeth in their mouths, which is not a common trait among New Yorkers. One common trait among New Yorkers, which is not common among Maryland residents, is men like to wear fitted baseball caps with “du-rags” rolled up in their hats and big flashy earrings in their ears.
There is a difference in the styles of speaking among young people from these two cultures. New Yorkers often refer to each other as “son or dun”, while people from Maryland say certain things like “bama or kicking” which is not commonly used with both cultures. Although music between the two cultures is basically the same, Maryland residents like Go-Go music, which is a type of music that is performed live and focused on percussion, which originated in D. C. and Maryland.

Go-Go music is not well known or liked by New Yorkers. Although there are many differences between these two cultures, there are some things that can be found in common. There are a few similarities between people from New York and Maryland. The wearing of baggy clothing by men is a similarity easily noticed between both cultures. Men from both states like big t-shirts and baggy jeans. Girls clothing is also similar in the small tight name brand clothing that shows a lot of curves.
Music listened to by New Yorkers and people from Maryland is basically the same. Young adults like to traditionally blast loud music in their cars and houses. The basic food choices and styles of cooking are similar between the two cultures. Another similar trait is hairstyles.
There is not real difference in the way people from both states cut and style their hair. To gain a sociological perspective of these two cultures it is important to understand how their culture affects their lives. These observations help to realize that everyone comes from different backgrounds and settings. Every trait is something that makes each culture unique in its own way. Some of the basic differences between these two cultures arise because of geographical reasons; others differ because of interests.
Every distinct difference is something that is valued among each culture. Although the particulars of each culture may differ from one another having culture itself remains universal.
