In the book Curly’s wife is very symbolic of eve and has many of the same injustices that women did during that time period. In the book she is only viewed through from the eyes of men and is portrayed frequently as a sex object instead of a person. She can not say what she wants to say and can’t talk to whom she wants to. Steinbeck shows through Curly’s wife how sexist people in that time period were.
Women in the book are talked about as “trouble causers”, “jail bait”, and “whores”. All of those names are very degrading. He never names culy’s wife in the book which symbolizes that she is just a possession because he names all of the male characters. Woman couldn’t farm, do labor work, and the only useful thing they could do back then was become a prostitute. The book pointed towards woman getting in the way of men accomplishing there dreams and thoughts. In the end of the book his wife not purposefully destroying Lenny and Gorge’s dreams of having a big farm one day. At the beginning of the book a woman framed Lenny for rape.
“What a tramp” George said about Curly’s wife on page 32. Also on page 32 George says “don’t you even take a look at that crazy bitch. I don’t care what she says and what she does. I seen’ em poison before, but I never seen no piece of jail bait worse than her. You leave her be.” “When she was standin in the doorway showin’ her legs” these quotes states those women are basically nothing but trash and are always trying to get men off task and that woman are always trying to seduce them.

Curly’s wife is the only woman who lives on the farm. All of the workers makes fun of her because she is not a male. “Know what I think?” George did not answer. “Well, I think Curley’s married… a tart.” (pg. 14).
