Current Passing Grade for School Athletes is Sufficient School athletes are a different kind of breed students. Learning competencies set as standards by schools all over the country are for the ordinary students who are not expected to hurdle great physical challenges like athletes. There is, therefore, a need for special deliberation before their required 60% passing grade in each class be increased to 70% every grading period in order to be eligible to play. Though some teachers and coaches believe that the minimum 60% requirement is not high enough standard for a student to be considered academically qualified, a mere10% increase in the grade requirement is actually almost insignificant in terms of the increase in numerical grade yet this may involve more efforts in the part of student athletes and therefore less time to focus on their sports. Athletes are born and raised differently since they need special muscles to play whatever games they are interested in. Their interests in sports require active physical involvement and therefore is quite different from that an ordinary student. After school hours, they need extra energy and time for daily practices in preparation for small playoffs as well as for championships. They need extra efforts to sharpen up their skills that could either determine the downfall or victory of the school.
And therefore as students who are expected to win for the school, they need to be given less pressure in academic performance. No, they should not be treated with extra special attention. In fact, they need to be part of all their classes, joining all learning activities for the development of their brains which they also need for their total development. What they need is lesser academic demands. The 60% minimum requirement is enough to show that these student athletes are not only brawns but are also developing their brains as they go through the complex process of high school education. In time, when these athletes had gone to college then had started their adult lives, they shall recall their lives as students who made their schoolmates cheer in united delight and who made the whole school proud for the glory they bring home after every sports competition they won..
