David Carson, as a graphic designer started by creating visuals for Transworld Skateboarding magazine, later his art could be seen in Transworld Snowboarding, Beach Culture, Surfer and finally Ray Gun that revealed Carsons vivid graphical language; he was able to connect to the audience using his unique code of color and shape, making print medium alive and fresh. Its his work in Ray Gun that made him renown; his works were highly praised in mainstream periodicals including New York and Newsweek. William Gibson in his book Out of Control, gives the following description of the designers work in Ray Gun, “The event horizon of futurity, as close as any windshield, its textures mapped in channel-zap and the sequential decay of images faxed and refaxed into illegibility . . . brave new worlds abraded onto the concrete of the now.

This is design pushing back against the onslaught of an unthinkable present” Carsons graphics have attracted a great number of fans and critics, some even say that the designer has revitalized print medium in the onslaught of digitalization. Undoubtedly, Carson most one of the best known designers of the last decade, often called a practitioner of innovative visual and graphic design, while his works have been labeled the new typography or deconstructive typography. Carson is definitely a celebrity in the world of graphics, he has published several books including The End of Print that became best-selling graphic design title of all time. Born Texan, Carson received little of formal graphic education, his style was heavily influenced by early childhood impressions while traveling around America, Puerto Rico and the West Indies(Leslie).

Swiss graphic designer Hans-Rudolph Lutz have introduced Carson to graphical design in the course of three-week workshop in Switzerland. Carson began forging his style by heavily experimenting works that he created from 1982 to 1987. At that time he was employed at high school in San Diego area. Carson worked as art and film director, graphic designer, in addition to that he was a professional surfer. Ocean and surfers subculture has urged him to move to West Coast, where he became involved in Beach Culture magazine(Shepter).
Carson original approach to graphics was enchanting and captivating. His works in the beginning of the nineties were chokingly straightforward and communicative.
His distinctive handling of typography not only give a favorable introduction to content, but often communicated more than content itself giving the desirable impression to the reader. It was best illustrated by the attention magazine Ray Gun received, which was more due to the Carson design rather than average content. The graphical message created for Ray-Ban sunglasses can serve as a good example of Carson approach communication using print graphics. The product was called Ray-Ban Orbs and the designer used O image of the name. The concept was adopted in all advertising materials accompanying Ray-Ban sunglasses. Ray-Ban graphical ads had Carsons name in a corner.
This contributed to his fame, because public was attracted by the images Carson created, and majority of them carried his name. This served as a great advertising tool to the author and his talent. Consequently Carsons name went along with most popular commercial brands, including Pepsi Cola, Nike, Levi-Strauss, Microsoft, Budweiser, Giorgio Armani, Ray-Ban and NBC. Carson became famous first of all due to his unconventional usage of typography to get a profound impression. As Peter Plagens put it in Newsweek article, referring to Carsons work in Transworld Skateboarding, [Carson ]shattered the nice, clean, readable grid, scattered headlines and text across overlapping photos, and raised illegibility to an art form, In the same article Carson justifies this move by saying that people are tend to read less and he tried to lure them to pay attention to the context. The designer advocates breaking the rules for a clearer vision of the whole message. According to Carson each rule of typography serves a particular purpose the work of a designer to understand this purpose and reinvent the rule if necessary, in other words, the meaning determines content, not rules.

During his workshop “Time After Type” Dusseldorf, Carson even suggested the signing of the space by putting large type into one corner. This creates a unique Carsons expression giving the viewer an illusion of perspective on the message. INTERNET SITE SHEET design is a great example of Carsons original approach. This wonderfully works for an Internet search company, which seeks to emphasize the ability to extract the right information. INTERNET SITE SHEET is very characteristic of Carson, clearly showing his approach to typography.
With the help of the designer text is seen as a whole rather than a set of separate words. The creator rejects worn-out rules and methods as ineffective suggesting an alternative method that achieves far better results. Carson works have draw attention because the designer treats each message individually, in contrast with common graphics that wrap up content in standard package. The designer offers uniqueness, a feast for eyes, while the majority of typography that we encounter in print media is stale and monotonous.
