I, David Suzuki am an award-winning scientist, environmentalist, and a broadcaster. I myself have a passion for science, nature and studies of the environment. I was born on March 24th, 1936 and I am presently 76 years old today. I was born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia and I have three other female siblings, one whom is my twin whose name is Marcia. My life began as a struggle but in the end it was an achievement.
I wouldn’t have stepped foot in Canada and make such a drastic difference if it wasn’t for my grandparents. My grandparents immigrated to Canada in the beginning of the 20th century. In my early stages of childhood I was vanquished with unpleasant experiences. I and my family went through internment which is separation of one another, when the Canadian government decided to battle Japan in war during the time of 1942. My father was sent to a labour camp in Solsqua, which was a small town in British Columbia’s interior.
My family had owned a dry-cleaning business, but after two months when my father had left us the Canadian government had sold this business. After that, me along with my mother and my two other sisters were sent to a camp in Slocan City, which was by far from where my father was kept. After the Second World War was finished, we had to relocate to several places and then we settled in London, Ontario. This was when my mom and dad started working for the Suzuki Brothers Construction Company owned by my father’s brothers. After these events my life started building up and I was taking more steps up and progressing.

My education started from when I was sent to Mill Street Elementary School, then when Secondary school came around, I attended two different high schools, for my Grade 9 year I went to Leamington Secondary School, and for my three other years I went to London Central Secondary School located in London, Ontario. Later on in the year of 1958, I received my Bachelor of Arts from Amherst College in Massachusetts. In 1961, I received my Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Chicago. Altogether, I personally have received twenty-six honorary degrees from different universities around the world. As life went on, I had many progressions and satisfactions that led me to be what I am today.
I am the Co-founder of the David Suzuki foundation, which was founded in 1991, located in the same area where I was born where is Vancouver, British Columbia. My group and I work by the motto, “solutions are in our nature.” This foundation is a non-profit organization, but we luckily get our funds to sustain this foundation from over 40,000 donors! The target area of work to be done throughout this foundation is in the United States and as well as Canada. My main goal for this foundation is to work towards balancing human needs with the Earth’s ability to sustain all life. I and my team’s goal are to find and communicate practical ways to achieve this balance. I am especially focusing on five program areas for this foundation, these are: protecting our climate, transforming the economy, protecting nature, reconnecting with nature, and finally building communities. My Foundation uses sciences and education to promote solutions that conserve nature and help achieve sustainability within a generation.
In summary, I believe we all are put on this Earth for a reason, to make a change. I started small but look where I am today! To some I could be a role model and to some I can be an inspiration. Follow your heart, never give up and make a difference.
