The movie has been directed by Peter Weir. The main characters of the movie are John Keating (Robin Williams), Neil Perry (Robert Sean Leonard), Knox Overstreet (Josh Charles), Charlie Dalton (Gale Hansen), Richard Cameron (Dylan Kussman), Steven Meeks (Allelon Ruggiero), Todd Anderson (Ethan Hawke) and Gerard Pitts (James Waterston).
These are the senior students at the academy, and Mr. Keating is their new English teacher.
In the movie many ideas has been explored, like tradition, honor, discipline and excellence, through the students at Welton boys academy in 1950s. The story is about a group of students and it is centered around Mr. Keating, who’s an exciting new English and poetry teacher at the academy. Mr. Keating is keen on poetry, and uses it to inspire the students to live life with passion. He want them to examine their lives and to not follow blindly. The students have been told by their parents what they will be in future. But Mr. Keating want them to be who they are, and not to be who and what their parents and teachers expects them to be. Mr. Keating is educating in a very strict atmosphere where equality is the rule. Students are being taught in a different way by their new teacher. One day he tell them to rip out an introduction of their textbook, which he finds ridiculous. He continues letting them stand on the desk and see the world on another way.

He tells them about a club which he was in, called death poets society which inspires some of the students to recreate the club. At nights they sneak outside the school yard meeting in a cave to discuss and write poetry, and other literature based topics to express their emotions. Because of these meetings the boys lives changes. Knox Overstreet falls in love with a girl and begin writing poems to her, Todd Anderson overcomes his shyness, Neil finds his profession in acting, which is against his fathers conceptions. This is unacceptable at the school, which discourages the students to be themselves. In fact they should be in their rooms and studying ordered substance that their teachers instruct. Neil write a fake letter on behalf of his father to get the role at the play. He doesn’t want to miss this chance because his playing the main character. And if he tell his father about it, he will send Neil to another school and will disapprove. So Neil goes to Keating for advice, and Keating tell him to go to his father and make him understand how he feels. But Neil doesn’t has the courage to talk to his father the same way as he did to Keating. He proceeds the play “Midsummer nights dream” at the theater. At the end of the play his dad fins out and claims him to quit the play. His father takes him home and narrate him, to send him to a military school. There he will be prepared to study medicine in Harvard University. After a quit talk his father goes to bed. Unable to achieve what awaits him in future and make his father understand his feelings, Neil commits suicide. The headmaster starts a research at the request of his parents.
Richard meets the school board and squeal on Keating. Afterward he goes to the rest of the group and tells them to blame on Keating. Charlie Give Richards a punch on the face, and gets expelled. Richard warn the rest to scold on Keating and that would be the best for their own. Todd is called up to Nolan’s office, where his parents are waiting. He is being forced by Nolan to admit that he was a member of the “Dead poets society”. And to sign documents that is blaming Keating. Todd doesn’t has other choice rather then signing the document, while signing he sees the others signatures on the papers. John Keating gets fired without reason. The boys new English teacher is Nolan. At the end of the movie Keating come to the classroom to get some personal stuff of his and leave, when Todd suddenly get up on his desk an calling out “O,Captain, My Captain”. Nolan orders Todd to sit down, but instead the rest of the class does the same as Todd. Mr. Keating leaves the classroom with sadness and tears in his eyes.
