Delhi Airport Metro Express Opens To Public
February 23,2011: After missing it October 2010’s deadline, the Delhi Metro finally opened its gates of the Delhi Airport Express Metro to the general public. The Delhi Airport Metro Express (DAME) is a Delhi Metro Line ,from New Delhi railway station to Dwarka Sector 21,linking the Indira Gandhi International Airport.
The total length of the Orange Line,as it will be called as,is 22.7 km,out of which 15.7km of the route will be underground and the rest elevated. The trains on the the line will run at speeds of upto 135km/hour,the first time ever in the country that a train will be running at such a high speed. The project, which cost the treasury 57 billion rupees, has still a little bit of ground work left for the link to be fully functional with all its amenities. The line is yet to open all of its stations with the Dhaula Kuan Station & Indira Gandhi Aerocity Station yet to be completed with their construction.
The metro line will allow passengers to board the metro from the new delhi railway station with their luggage and check in directly to the airport via the metro link. However, due to some leftover paper work,Air India is yet to allow Check-In facilities at this point of time. The metro also has a separate coach, just for luggage,so that it might be easier for people with heavy luggage to go across from the railway station to the airport without any hassles. The metro link will be operated by the Anil Ambani led Reliance Industries on the ground and infrastructure, after it was constructed on a Private-Public Sector Partnership, with the DMRC,Reliance Industries and Larsen Toubro Ltd. Constructing the link on a partnership basis. The link has already helped other cities such as Hyderabad and Bangalore in charting out such a similar Metro Link in their cities as well.Unlike the other coaches of the Delhi Metro, the D.A.M.E has seats on 2X2 basis,so as to facilitate passenger comfort at high speeds.
