The Denver Art Museum is located at 100 West 14th Avenue Parkway. I attended the
exhibit of the “The Painters and the American West” on November 24, 2000.
The piece of artwork I critiqued for TECHNICALLY AND ARTISTICALLY, I chose
the “Girl with the sunburned nose”. The dimensions and media were painted with acrylic on
canvas. The date this piece was created was 1927-29. The artist who created this piece was
Victor Higgins. Victor Higgins was born in Indiana in 1885. At the age of fifteen, he enrolled in
the Art Institute of Chicago against his parents’. He studied Academy of Fine Arts. Higgins
found the strong light and color in New Mexico and this refreshed him to his academic
upbringing. He joined the Taos Society of Artists in 1917, but did not settle permanently in the
region. Though primarily remembered as a landscape artist, his unique transitional style also
extended to still life and figure works. Higgins died in 1949. Using Elements this artwork had
many. He used Color, which has a value from lightness to darkness because of the wallpaper
behind the girl; it begins from light blue to dark blue. Form, was used with her coat it was
painted in a three dimensional way. Space, had a lot of positive space because the wallpaper
behind her took up all of the space. Texture, the painting had a unique way of making the piece
of art look real. Using Principles Higgins used Movement, in his painting the wall lead the
The Essay on The Global Village HUM 300 20th Century Arts And Artist
The 20th century is replete with personages who helped set the standards or defined the course of national or international history. In the artistic world, many great individuals contributed to making the period interesting, revolutionary and creative. viewer to look at the girl. Balance, was symmetrical because it was of a still life figure,
which had to be balanced. Emphasis, was the background of the painting. Rhythm,
was irregular because not everything was the same shape from the background. Contrast,
was from light to dark. He also used Unity in his painting, this gave completeness to
the background. The materials used in this painting by Victor Higgins were acrylic on canvas.
I critiqued a piece of artwork for a PERSONAL RESPONSE, I chose “Another Church,
Hernandez, New Mexico”. The dimensions and media of this artwork were acrylic on canvas.
This piece was created in 1937. From the painting of Georgia O’ Keefe I found that she has a
religion due to the cross in the middle of the painting and how the painting is of a church.
I think O’ Keefe is trying to communicate to the viewer that God is a part of nature. I think she is
doing this because she painted the church behind hills and trees and just everything that
surrounds the church. I think this because the hills, the trees and the sky are a big part of the
painting. For my emotional response I had a feeling of completeness to the artwork and security
because of the church. This artwork made me feel safe. I think Georgia O’ Keefe has done this
from the cross inside the church. This painting evoked me to a memory when I went to
Tijuana, in Mexico and I built a church for a city and it didn’t matter the size just as long as God
was there with them.
I chose two pieces of artwork to COMPARE AND CONTRAST them. First piece was
the “Bend in the River”. The dimensions and media of this artwork was acrylic on canvas. Ernest
Blumenschien created this artwork in 1941. Ernest Blumenschein was born in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania in 1874 and raised in Dayton, Ohio. He was determined to be a violinist; he studied
at the Cincinnati Conservatory for a year before choosing to pursue art. He trained at the
Cincinnati Art Academy and the Art Students League in New York. He was one of the six
founding members of the Taos Society of Artists, and considered by his peers to be the most
The Review on Frederic Edwin Church: Art Report On Texture
Art is composed of many different elements. In this case however, the element being the focus of attention is texture. According to the book, Foundations of Art and Design by Lois Fichner, “Aesthetic experiences are shaped by senses other than sight. Perhaps the most basic of these is touch”. (118). This quote by the author clearly shows that texture is fundamental in art. Many works of art do ...
accomplished painter of the group, Blumenschein died in 1960. The second piece of art was ”
Children of the Mountain”. The dimensions and media of this artwork was acrylic on canvas.
This was created in 1866. Thomas Moran created this piece of art. Thomas Moran was born in
the city of Bolton, Lancashire, England on 12 January 1837. Thomas Moran was destined to
become one of America’s greatest landscape artists. Thomas showed and early interest in art, and
at the age of 15 sought employment. In 1861, he and his brother sailed for the British Isles where
Tom spent months studying the pictures of his idol, Turner. Moran would learn much from
Turner about color and light, and would be referred to later as “the American Turner”. “Bend in
the River” was similar to “Children of the Mountain” in many ways. Both paintings were of the
mountains. Both artists included a waterfall or a river. Nature was a big part in both paintings
also. Both painters used similar colors. Although ” Bend in the River” was compared to
“Children of the Mountain” both painting were also different. In “Bend in the River” the shapes
of the mountains are different then the shapes of the other artwork. Also the shapes of the trees
are different from each other also. The color of “Bend in the River” was lighter and calmer then
“Children of the Mountain”. Also one artist painted a calm river while the other artist painted an
upbeat and fast waterfall. The feelings in “Bend in the River” was eeling of calm and happy. And
the feeling in “Children of the Mountain” was sad and mournful. The use of colors were very
interesting to look at because both were different yet they were alike.
